Keeping The School Spirit

These years are the best yet and they disappear before you can blink twice.

Keeping The School Spirit
WSU

Being a first generation student, I never grew up being a die-hard representative of any college. So when it came time to choose a school that I would spend the next four years of my life, I was unbiased. I took cost and distance from home into consideration and it brought me to Washington State University. I joined a sorority because being an out of state student I was grouped with thousands of people who were strangers to me. I never imagined what it would be like to have such a strong bond with something that wasn't another human being. The love you begin to have for the school that is the right one for you and is helping you strive towards your dreams is unlike any other. I would have never imagined being so attached to something so quickly.

This year was the second time in WSU history that our football team had attended a bowl game in two consecutive years, and I could not be more proud of the school I represent. Let me tell you, the ambiance of this school is unlike any other. No matter what happens during any sporting event, Greek functions, moratoriums, drastic events etc., our school only comes closer together. Granted, many four-year universities feel this way, but I have never had more spirit or happiness than I have had within the last two years living in Pullman, Washington. I remember my first Cougar Football game like it was yesterday and it's so bittersweet to think I only have two more years as a student to cheer on my fellow Cougs.

I think the best thing about Washington State University would be the fact that I count down the days during Christmas and summer vacations in excitement for my return to Pullman. And if I had any advice for those who don’t have such a strong bond and attachment with where they are in life, it would be to strive for that kind of spirit. Strive for the spirit that brings you complete happiness. No matter the amount of hangovers, stress, and poverty that college brings into my life, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world. These years are the best yet and they disappear before you can blink twice.

It is so true when people say that these years go by so fast because it still blows my mind that I am already no longer a teenager and two years away from a bachelor’s degree. I am so happy to be a part of such an amazing community in Pullman, Washington and so thankful I get to represent such an outstanding school. If you are lucky enough to be able to attend a four-year university, chose wisely and pour out all of your love into your peers. Have an exasperated amount of spirit and happiness will follow you. There is no other experience like this one, and it is one you should cherish for a lifetime.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
