For the person who has ever wanted to live out their adventurous dreams of diffusing bombs, yet do not want to experience the painful feeling of death, this is the game they need to play.
In all seriousness, “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes” is an amazing game that redefines the thriller puzzle genre. Never before did I think I would have so much fun with a game about defusing bombs by solving small puzzles.
Here is the key though. One person can see the bomb, but not the diffusal manual, and the other person can only see the manual, but not the bomb. The game commands pinpoint perfect communication between the two players. They must work together to solve multiple small logic puzzles to defuse the bomb. Each puzzle requires them to work together and communicate what the other person needs to know so they can be on the same page. One mistake can be the difference between defeating the bomb and letting it explode in your hands.
One of the peculiar parts of this game is that there really isn’t a story to it. The closest thing to a story this game has is that there is a person diffusing many bombs presumably for their job. Other than that, there is no story. It is just a series of bombs that the player and a teammate need to disarm.
As stated, the game requires two or more players to fill the two roles needed in the game. The actual bomb diffuser job can only be performed by one person. The person viewing the bomb must communicate to the experts what is on the bomb, answer any questions asked by the experts and then to follow the instructions given by the experts to a “T”. The experts have a completely different job. They need to take the information that the person viewing the bomb gives them, interpret it correctly and use the manual to solve the puzzle presented to them. The nice thing about the expert's’ job is that multiple people can perform it at once. Once the game gets to the later stages, the bombs will get more and more difficult and the amount of modules increase. Having multiple experts can really save time as the diffuser can assign modules to different experts and get them ready to solve in advance. In fact, for the final bomb, it is near impossible to do with just one expert.
Speaking of the final bomb, it is tough. I am not kidding. I honestly feel that the “I Am Hardcore” bomb is one of the hardest final bosses in any video game. It has the maximum amount of modules, includes puzzles from every stage of the game and does not allow a single mistake. I am not exaggerating when I say that this bomb will take you several attempts to even getting close to solving it. The only way to solve it is to do it in the job you are most comfortable, with a partner whom you have great communication with and have a strong understanding of how every module works and can be solved. Both jobs need to have experience in the other job to understand what they are going through and what they need to hear to solve the bomb.
When it comes to modules, the game comes with a wide array that can either be solved in a matter of seconds or never be completely solved at all. Some of the easiest ones are cutting the correct wire out of a set of colored wires, figuring out how long to press giant buttons and figuring out in what order a set of buttons with weird symbols need to be pressed. However, the game also has harder modules that include morse code, wire sequences and some modules that can’t be fully solved. These “Needy” modules require constant attention while other modules can be solved. Needy modules can only be solved by solving every other puzzle first.
This is an amazing game that will put even true friendship to the test. Each bomb presents a new and interesting challenge that can be completed with the right communication between two or more people. This game was one of my main votes for 2015 Best New Game Concept for it’s use of clear communication. The fun and interesting gameplay make this a must-try game for pretty much anybody. It appeals to both thrill-seekers while also appeals to puzzles lovers. It has reached an equilibrium of the two. It isn't just a matter of cut the red or blue wire... That is only one of the puzzles.
I rate this game 9.5 hardcore bombs out of 10.
