This is a pretty big topic to talk about - I know. I'm not even here to promote what "side" I was on last year during the big scandal about our university's previous chancellor, Linda Katehi. I will admit that I had some strong feelings about the whole thing, but like I said, I'm not going to share them. What I'm really here to talk about is the impact the whole "Fire/Don't Fire Katehi" had on our student (and even faculty) community.
People formed sides for this whole argument. There were students protesting her, and let's admit it, some things got a little out of hand. HOWEVER, every student undoubtedly had the right to protest. Then the students and faculty members that wanted to keep Katehi as our chancellor were also responsible for making this entire event a real fight.
People began to view someone who took the other side as an enemy. Those who claimed they wanted Katehi out were viewed as crazy, and vice-versa with the ones who wanted to keep her. UC Davis, at least part of it, was divided. Everyone was basically attacking each other about how their side was wrong and unnecessary.
I'm not a faculty member, but from what I saw among students, I'm pretty sure some faculty members formed some negativity towards one another.
Look at what this whole thing did - it not only brought on the rest of the nation's disagreement with our former chancellor, but it got all of us to hate on one another. Tour groups came to campus and saw the opposite of what parents wanted for their kids - loud chants and protests (even though were rightfully allowable).
We looked like a divided school, instead of promoting how unified we're supposed to be. I'm glad this fight died down; everything seems to be improving in terms of our campus's environment. Let's try to keep it that way.
