Exploiting people without their consent should not be considered art.

Another Reason Why Kanye West Shouldn't Be "Famous"

I will be the first person to tell you that I care very, very little about Kanye West. I know him as the rapper who married Kim Kardashian and interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. I've seen/heard about the clothes and shoes he sells for insane prices.

So, when Kanye dropped his newest album, The Life of Pablo, I was not interested. I did not flock to whatever streaming service he made it available on. It's not that I boycotted Kanye's recent work; I simply wasn't interested. When the music video for "Famous" appeared on Tidal, I saw screenshots on various social media and was immediately confused. I had heard of the drama between West and Taylor Swift after one of his lyrics accredited him for her success: "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous."

West's music video, though, makes those lyrics look like child's play. No longer simply an offhand comment in the middle of a song, Swift is one of the central characters of his new video. She is one of ten people shown lying in bed with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. West calls it a "comment on fame", the piece based on Vincent Desiderio's "Sleep".

I don't care if Kanye West thinks he is a revolutionary artist. His newest video exploits multiple celebrities - which include Amber Rose, Rihanna and polticiains, Donald Trump and George Bush, among others - for a cheap comment on our society. Celebrities may be giving up some of their right to privacy when stepping into the lime light, but they at least deserve some human decency. West, though, portrays them all nude and vulnerable.

There are a few important things to note about this video. First, it is only the women who are shown in very compromising positions. All of the men have their genitalia covered by blankets, given more privacy and therefore more respect. Second, the video includes Rihanna beside Chris Brown, her ex-boyfriend who is known for abusing her during their relationship together. Bill Cosby, also featured in the video, has been accused of multiple accounts of sexual assault, which including drugging his partners and sexually abusing children.

Not only are these celebrities displayed in such positions, but they are all either wax figures or models, Photo-shopped to resemble those that they are based upon. It's becoming increasingly clear that Kanye did not ask any of the stars if he had their permission to use them in his video. Donald Trump's rep has denied that is actually Trump in the video and Bush's rep stated of the former U.S. president, "That's not him."

This isn't about the nudity or the video concept itself. It's about consent and allowing people to decide if they would like to be publicly exploited to support someone else's career. It was not fair to any of the celebrities portrayed. They deserved a chance to give or revoke their consent, at the very least. West could have gone a number of different routes, portraying other famous entities or even changing his concept slightly to show more respect for these people.

Instead, he gives us a video of women portrayed sexually without their consent. Why is our society so willing to accept something like this simply because its creator refers to it as "art"? In the wake of the Brock Turner rape trial, I am sick and tired of women being treated as objects that men can use for their benefit. As Lena Dunham commented on the piece, "Now I have to see the prone, unconscious, waxy bodies of famous women, twisted like they've been drugged and chucked aside at a rager? It gives me such a sickening sense of dis-ease."

With his video, West proves yet again that he can not keep his fame simply on his own. He must prey on those around him, demeaning them in order to increase his own popularity in short bursts.

I am not going to call this video art. Portraying women sexually without their consent is not art. Devaluing human beings for shock value is not art. Publicizing known abusers and rapists is not art.

This video is only one thing: a reminder that Kanye West should not be #famous.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
