Justin Bieber. We all know the name. His chart-topping album "Purpose" contains hit after hit like "Sorry," "What Do You Mean," and "Love Yourself." Even those who weren't always a Belieber, find themselves battling the need to dance to his catchy tunes. And while the world's love for Justin Bieber continues to climb, there was was a time where Justin Bieber was on everybody's hate list. The following maps the rise and fall (and then rise again) of our beloved Canadian pop sensation.
1994: The Birth of a Star
Justin Bieber was born March 1 in Ontario, Canada. Growing up, he learned to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. Not only does he have a versatile portfolio of different interests, he graduated high school with a 4.0.
2007: His First Performance
In Early 2007, Justin performed for a local competition singing "So Sick" by Ne-Yo and placed second. His mother posted a video on YouTube for his family and friends to watch. Justin continued to record covers that his mother posted to the same YouTube channel and his popularity skyrocketed.
2008: His Big Break
Scooter Braun came across this 12 year old's talent and convinced his mother to fly him to Atlanta for a potential record deal. At age 13, Bieber went to Atlanta to record demo tapes. One week later, he began singing for Usher.
2009: 13 Years Old and Topping the Charts
His first hit "One Time" was released to the radio while he continued to record his first album. The song reached number 12 on Canada's Hot 100 after only being released for a week. It then peaked at 17 on the Billboard's Hot 100. "One Time" was certified Platinum in US and Canada, and Gold in Australia and New Zealand. Bieber was an international superstar by age 13. When we all saw Justin Bieber for the first time, we were charmed by his long hair and cute smile.
November 17, 2009, his first album entitled "My World" hit the market, enchanting young girls hearts with songs like "One Less Lonely Girl," "Love Me," and "Favorite Girl." It sold 137,000 copies in the first week. This album was certified platinum in the US, Canada, and the UK.
He started to make his first TV appearances on shows like Good Morning America, The Today Show, MTV, The Ellen DeGeneres show, and many more. He even performed for Obama and his wife at the White House in December of 2009.
2010: His Rise to Fame Continues
Justin Bieber started out 2010 strong and was a presenter for the 52nd annual Grammy's. He was then invited to be a vocalist for the remake of "We Are the World" to benefit Haiti after the earthquake. He sings the opening line, replacing the voice of Lionel Richie, which originally began the song.
Meanwhile, also in January, Bieber releases his second album "My Worlds 2.0." The song "Baby" takes the world by storm. The song featuring Ludacris became an international hit. It reached the top 10 in almost every international market. "Baby" was a part of his second album entitled "My World 2.0" along with other chart toppers like "U Smile" and "Somebody to Love."
Later in the year, he was featured on many other TV talk shows and even CSI before re-releasing his "My World" album acoustically.
However, while all these amazing things were happening in his career, the beginning of Justin Bieber's spiral into the immense hatred by half of the world was around the corner. Justin Bieber hired a "swag coach" and the word "swag" lingered in between every word he spoke. He also tweeted an enemies phone number to a million plus followers, who harassed this enemy to no end.
2011: Killing the Box Office
February of 2011, Bieber released a film of his concert "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," which reached 12.4 million dollars opening day, 30.1 million dollars by the end of the weekend, and over 98 million dollars worldwide.
Following his movie, he released a remixed album called "Never Say Never – The Remixes," which featured Miley Cryrus, Chris Brown, Kanye West, and many others.
The same year, Justin Bieber was ranked #2 on the Forbes list of Best-Paid Celebrities under 30.
And on November 1, 2011, Bieber released the Christmas-themed "Under the Mistletoe," his second studio album. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling 210,000 copies in its first week of release.
If that wasn't enough success for the young pop sensation, he also began recording his third studio album entitled "Believe."
However, rumors blow up that he impregnated a 13 year old fan, Mariah Yeater. He takes a paternity test to prove he is not the father, but his reputation continue to plummet.
2012: The Bad Boy Bieber Begins
In March, the hit song "Boyfriend" was released. It changed his normal poppy vibe and drew inspiration from R&B and dance-pop The song debuted at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling a total of 521,000 digital units, the second-highest-ever debut digital sales week.
In June, the rest of his album was released. It surprised everyone with its different beats and contemporary urban sounds. "Believe" debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming his fourth number-one album.
In September, to further promote his album, he embarked on the Believe Tour. And announced yet another acoustic version of one of his albums on the Ellen DeGeneres show.
However, Justin Bieber is pulled over for going 80 mph while dodging paparazzi. This is not his only car related incident of 2012. He is also featured on the GQ cover, where he brags about drinking beer. What a "bad boy." He then appears on Ellen to complain about not receiving a Grammy nomination.
2013: Putting Out Music, But Hitting Rock Bottom
In attempt to keep his fame going, his second movie, "Justin Bieber's Believe," was also released. As well as very popular songs such as "Heartbreaker", "All That Matters", "Recovery", "Hold Tight", "Change Me", and my personal favorite "Confident" featuring Chance the Rapper.
However, Bieber returned to Saturday Night Live, where he made almost everyone who he worked with uncomfortable. In March, he fainted backstage before his London show and then cancelled his Portugal show due to low ticket sales. He also experienced several song leaks. Furthermore, during the holiday season, Justin announces he is retiring from the music industry at 19 years old. He then takes back that statement, which infuriates reporters. He then assaults a tour manager and apparently spits in the Gatorade of a radio host during an interview. Bieber is then spotted smoking marijuana, making graffiti art in Rio de Janeiro, and peeing in a bucket while talking about his frustration about Bill Clinton. He also tours london in a gas mask and is carried up the Great Wall of China after causing some kind of disturbance by body guards. If that isn't enough, he also tried to sneak a pet monkey into Germany. And to top it all off, he visits the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and claims that if she were still alive, she would have definitely been a Belieber.
2014: Just Rock Bottom
There really wasn't much positive going on for the Biebs.
However, this is when the hate for Justin Bieber was very real. 2014 started off with a petition to deport Bieber back to Canada. It ended with over 273,000 signatures. This was enough to make the White House take notice, where they decided not to deport the Canadian sensation.
He also apparently was smoking so much weed that the pilots of his private jet had no choice but to wear oxygen masks. He is caught egging his neighbors house. He is then arrested for a DUI, resisting arrest, and drag racing. To further his track record with automobiles, he's arrested on assault charges after his ATV collides with a mini-van. As soon as he exits jail, he posts a picture on top of a car and puts it next to a picture of Michael Jackson on Instagram and called himself "The Kind of Pop". There is also a video that surfaces about one of his arrests and after every question he gives a bad boy Bieber smile and keeps repeating the phrase "I do not recall."
At he end of the year, Seth Rogan summarizes it best when he tweets, "All jokes aside, Justin Bieber is a piece of sh*t." It received about 210,000 retweets.
2015: We Missed You Justin
At the beginning of 2015, it is a known fact that everyone hated Bieber. And while we all really wanted to hate him, he was still releasing hot tracks like "Where Are Ü Now."
In March, he was nationally roasted on Comedy Central. At the end of it all, he promised to get back to the music and vowed to change his ways. We were all skeptical. But after his performance at the VMAs that ended in literal tears, we were all unsure how to feel. Do we love him? Do we hate him?
When the rest of his album entitled "Purpose" was released, it was a done deal. Even those who made fun of his hair flips and teenage love songs couldn't argue that his album was absolute fire. Every single song on that album had everyone dancing, crying, or doing both at the same time. "What Do You Mean", "Sorry", "Love Yourself", so many songs that just will not get out of your head.
I mean, he was photographed naked, but most people weren't complaining. He didn't really do much but surprise us with great music and talk about how much he misses Selena Gomez.
I once cried at his concert in 2009, I then hated him from 2009 till the very end of 2015, but he is back in my good graces. He may kind of look like Ellen DeGeneres and I am kind of skeptical about how long he Justin Bieber will be continue his good behavior, but please don't stop the music. What else will I sing in the shower?
