"The View" recently premiered its new season with a new panel, but things are off to a rocky start after comments were made about Miss Colorado's talent during the Miss America pageant. Before we get into the nitty-gritty let's back up a bit.
During the pageant that aired last week, Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, decided to take a different route when preparing for the talent section. She appeared on stage not wearing a fancy, evening gown or preparing a gimmick. Instead, she had written a monologue about her not-so-glamorous life of being a nurse. Many were shocked because she did not go the traditional route. Others, however, applauded her bravery for choosing her profession as well as using the pageant as a platform for awareness.
The co-hosts of "The View" took a more negative approach. Michelle Collins, who is new to the show, was the first to bring up Johnson. Collins expresses disappoint with Johnson, because she was expecting something more exciting. Collins also accuses the sketch of being boring and the other co-hosts laugh along. Not one of them defends the honor of nursing, and they all laugh along as if being a nurse is playing dress up. In the background, you can also hear another co-host saying "That's not a real talent" and Joy Behar adds "Why does she have a doctor's stethoscope on?"
They treat nurses as though their life's work is trivial, but nurses were not having it. Social media has united to promote #NotJustANurse and #NursesUnite. Many have been showing off their nurses pride by posting pictures wearing their stethoscopes...
While others are asking the question: who has the real talent?
Other nurses took an informative approach. Katari Allard wrote an open letter trying to educate "The View" co-host about the skills that a nurse must learn, as did Krystal Pendergraft.
Nurses are saving lives every day. What greater talent is there? They are working long shifts dealing with things that many of us cannot stomach, all while providing reassurance and compassion to their patients.
It's not until you or someone you love needs a nurse that you will fully appreciate all they do. They are NOT just nurses. They become friends, and they pray right alongside you. They become your support system.
Nursing is not a job for just anyone. It takes someone with special talent and an even more special heart.
