There are two types of people: the night owl, and the “morning person.” The morning person doesn’t care if there’s an 8 a.m. class. The morning person goes to sleep at a reasonable hour and doesn’t hit snooze in the morning. We don’t need the snooze; we get enough snooze. So why are we so happy early in the day? Why are we so damn productive? Eh, it’s just morning people things. We’re a little different.
1. We get out of bed and get out of the house
Yeah, the bed is comfy, but think of all the exciting things we have planned today! Time to eat a healthy breakfast and hop into that perfect outfit you planned to go to the gym or class. You know that feeling when it's the first day of school after a long summer and you actually can’t wait to get up? Yup, that's every day for us.
2. We are happier
We’re more adjusted to a normal schedule and probably less cranky because there’s no scrambling to get to work the next morning because we slept late. When the sun is up, we throw open those shades and welcome light with open arms. Did you know that exposure to natural light improves moods?
3. We get better grades
The studies prove it: almost a full grade point higher according to WebMD. Of course, it depends on what time of day you’re most productive, but it’s been found that the more of a morning person you are, the more likely it is you have a higher GPA. It’s not too hard to understand: there’s less missing class, less going out, and more time to do whatever you need to do.
4. We have a lower risk of depression
Yes, more studies! This probably ties in with being happier, but it's been examined that preferences for timing of daily activities (like late at night) may cause greater risk for sleep problems and mood disorders. Good news, huh?
5. We like to be organized and prepared
Calendars and planners and agendas with all the spaces filled in; a place for everything and everything in its place -- that’s what we like to see. No stressing and scrambling -- no, we don’t like that.
6. We work when we don’t have to
We like to be productive. Why procrastinate? Of course we take time to relax sometimes, but only after the important work is done. Did you know your brain is most alert earlier in the day? It’s the best time to tackle the hard things!
7. We envy our night owl friends
It’s not like we don’t ever try to stay up. We envy some of our nighttime counterparts; it’s probably pretty cool being up at the calm of night or feeling like there’s still so much time after 10 p.m. Sometimes we’re not the best at sleepovers, but we try so hard to stay up and join the fun! Some of our night owl friends are also the hardest working and intelligent people we know -- you guys get stuff done while we sleep! I enjoy a beautiful night every now and then, but I think I do better when the sun’s out. It's just morning person things.
