Why Long Distance Doesn't Always Suck

Just "LDR" Things

Let’s be honest, “distance makes the heart grow fonder” may be true, but it’s never fun. You’re going to have tear stained pillows and regular comfort food binges. Now while long distance relationships really push you outside of your comfort zone, and may even cause you to question it entirely, there’s a silver lining in every grey cloud, including a few like these…

Their pets are your pets

One of the best things about visits is seeing that person you’ve been missing for what feels like forever. One of the next best things is when you visit and their pets let you know THEY have been missing YOU. You’re technically family to them, just super busy and can only make it back for holidays or special weekends. But they love you all the same.

Being adventurous literally every time you’re together

We all know some couples who spend almost every day together and have trouble “finding things to do” and complain about not being exciting anymore. Well, when you only see each other once a month, there’s no possible way to run out of things to do, AND you never have time to do everything you’ve planned! Not only that, but all the little movie nights and dinner dates are extra special because every moment is cherished and never taken for granted.

Two words: sleep overs

There’s something so special about walking down to get breakfast at the same time, in the same place, as someone who you so rarely get to see. Sleepy eyes and yawns have never been so attractively innocent. And knowing that you’re going to wake up and it’s not just a dream, ahhh what a feeling.

The “I haven’t seen you in (enter time period apart) I missed you so much” hug

Picture it… You’ve just gotten off the plane, and you grabbed your carry on packed for the week. Speed walking down the longest hallway of your life, the “ground transportation” signs are pulling you like a magnet. You’re weaving in and out of casual travelers, pulling jukes and spin moves to avoid any timely collision. You have just two sets of double doors and an escalator that’s impossibly slow, but easier than tumbling down the stairs. You see the toes of sneakers, and slowly the person you’ve been waiting for. You drop your bags, run into their arms, time stops, world peace…. Actually, you clunk off the plane, and sprint to the bathroom first, but it’s still just as magical.

Your story could be made into a five-star movie

WARNING: Asking, “So how’d you meet?” is guaranteeing yourself at least a 10 minute sappy, love filled story about the unforgettable moment that will one day go down in history. There’s just something about the timing, the perfect timing, of how your paths crossed that sends shivers. Fate is a wonderful thing.

You’re rock solid

There’s something about surviving distance that makes you feel invincible. You learn so much more about yourselves apart then you could imagine, and all of a sudden trust becomes unwaveringly strong. Don’t get me wrong, you’re going to fight, and you’re going to have moments you’re ready to steal a plane to go strangle them, but in the end, suddenly nothing seems too hard for you to go through together.

You’re “beauty” routine has off days

Suddenly your razor is lasting longer, you don’t go through concealer as quickly, and your hair isn’t as fried from constant brutal heat. When you only spend a weekend together a month, being ‘lazy’ takes on a whole new meaning. No shave November becomes a monthly thing.

You get a sneak peek into a possible future, just in case

Since no matter how long you’re staying, you have to pack an overnight bag, you’re going to witness things that you may not otherwise if you lived closer together. You learn things like they can’t eat cereal without adding a serious amount of sugar, or they don’t crumple their toothpaste tube, instead they roll it out, or they have a weird hobby they keep secret. You see their quirks and pet peeves in a spotlight setting, and it gives you a chance to get out in case its too much to handle. (ps. I tend to think the quirks are kinda cute.)

Sometimes you can’t help who you fall for, even though they’re from a small town in PA while you reside in beach front FL. It's a learning process, an uphill climb, that has the most wonderful reward. It’s a challenge, and sometimes you’ll find yourself in a moment you never would have expected, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
