"You can shed tears that she is gone, or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all she's left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow because of yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her only that she is gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back. Or you can do what she'd want; smile, open your eyes, love and go on." - Anonymous
Olivia Rose Noel was a beloved daughter, sister, friend and many other things. She was born with a very rare heart condition, Congenital Heart Disease, which caused her to have multiple heart surgeries throughout her life. Aside from the scar on her chest, you never would have known she had a heart condition. Olivia did not let something she struggled with define who she was. She never used it as an excuse and she certainly did not let it hold her back. She was the definition of a true inspiration.
June 17th, 2015 was a day that many of us will never forget. It's the day we lost that person we called a beloved daughter, sister, and friend.
Olivia was an active sister of Alpha Sigma Tau (AST) where she constantly strived to make a great organization even better. She showed leadership and independence throughout her time in AST. She was also a part of the Panhellenic Council where she held positions such as Recruitment Counselor and Secretary.
In honor of her, Alpha Sigma Tau presented Jump for Olivia, an event which raised money for the American Heart Association and The Olivia Noel Scholarship Fund.
Jump for Olivia was held on April 1st, 2016, and over 100 people attended. The event was filled with her family, sisters, friends and peers who all were there to celebrate her life and raise awareness for heart disease. It consisted of activities such as jump roping, hula hooping , Minute to Win It, and an obstacle course where teams competed against each other. Win or lose, everyone was able to come together to raise awareness for a great organization and honor an even greater woman. By the end of the night, Jump for Olivia had raised $2,000.
Alpha Sigma Tau's historian, Katie Burlas, was able to capture some of Olivia's best features, favorite moments, and give us some background information on her heart disease:
Olivia, there is not a day that goes by where you are not thought about. Thank you for being an inspiration to us all. We love and miss you!
