Amidst the alleged Russian interference with the 2016 U.S Election, major changes have been made to the Trump Administration. Former FBI Director James Comey and National Security Adviser Michael Flynn have been fired, in what seemed as a cover against alleged contact with Russian intelligence. However, the sudden decision to remove Comey raised the question of Trump’s role in possible impeding FBI investigations. Missouri GOP Sen. Roy Blunt expressed his support in getting the former FBI Director to testify this week before Congress; stating that it will end all talks and “bring this to a conclusion”.
Although Comey is expected to testify on Capitol Hill, there seems to be a new ally on the rise, and his name is Rod Rosenstein…
Rosenstein is a Deputy Attorney General who will testify before a Senate panel the day before Comey’s expected testimony in what seems to be the platform for all the answers to all of the questions. The Senate Panel will host these back-to-back hearings on Wednesday and Thursday, in what would be a long awaited return to Capitol Hill for Rosenstein since his briefing on the issue of Comey’s sudden firing from the president. His role in F.B.I investigations is also duly noted in his power to appoint former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel; overseeing the investigation of alleged Russian interference with U.S. Databases during the election.
Dan Coats, Director of National Intelligence among others are also expected to testify before the Senate panel in what would be the most watched political event of the year to date. While republicans aren't necessarily holding there breaths and Democrats are waiting to hear the full story, there seems to be much anticipation surrounding the conclusion of the testimony of Comey; in what may reshape the landscape in the executive powers. There is just too much at stake that could cause the Trump administration to be under fire.
Although Trump expressed his intent not to pursue actions to impede Comey from testifying, the mere suggestion that he thought about it could raise questions on his true intent on possibly abusing executive powers. The platform surrounding this issue plays on itself in a game of smoke and mirrors, in which could either provide us with clear details as to what exactly happened during the presidential election, or continue to leave us in confusion. There is also speculation surrounding the fact that the hearing might be aired live.
Either way, all we can do is sit and wait for the conclusion to either grasp our attention, or leave us back in the same position that we first started out when the scandal broke through. According to the New York Times, there were memos kept of the meetings that featured both Comey and president Trump; all in which could hit the surface this Wednesday in what could be a shocker for the american people, and can help the democratic party seek the opportunity to force impeachment against the president.
Either way, both parties are awaiting the hearing of the century with this question in mind:
Could this be the next Watergate?
You be the Judge...
