I'm Going To Judge These Books By Their Covers

Let's see if I get these right.

I'm Going To Judge These Books By Their Covers

They say "never judge a book by its cover." Well, I'm going to just that, right now. I tried to find the most colorful book covers I could find and am going to attempt to guess what they are about and give a synopsis based just on the cover.

1. "The Day The Crayons Came Home"

My synopsis: OK, so, obviously, Mr. Green Crayon here is lost and has to go on an epic journey across America and try to avoid melting to make it home to all the other off-brand crayons.

Actual synopsis: So this is apparently a series. This is the second book in the series and the official synopsis that goes with it is:

"I'm not sure what it is about this kid Duncan, but his crayons sure are a colorful bunch of characters! Having soothed the hurt feelings of one group who threatened to quit, Duncan now faces a whole new group of crayons asking to be rescued. From Maroon Crayon, who was lost beneath the sofa cushions and then broken in two after Dad sat on him; to poor Turquoise, whose head is now stuck to one of Duncan's stinky socks after they both ended up in the dryer together; to Pea Green, who knows darn well that no kid likes peas and who ran away — each and every crayon has a woeful tale to tell and a plea to be brought home to the crayon box."

2. "A Spool of Blue Thread"

My synopsis: There are several things I could go off of here. Is this about sewing? Is the blue thread symbolic? What about the spool? Too many questions and I am very confused.

Actual synopsis:

"It was a beautiful, breezy, yellow-and-green afternoon." This is the way Abby Whitshank always begins the story of how she fell in love with Red that day in July 1959. The whole family—their two daughters and two sons, their grandchildren, even their faithful old dog—is on the porch, listening contentedly as Abby tells the tale they have heard so many times before. And yet this gathering is different too: Abby and Red are growing older, and decisions must be made about how best to look after them, and the fate of the house so lovingly built by Red's father. Brimming with the luminous insight, humor, and compassion that are Anne Tyler's hallmarks, this capacious novel takes us across three generations of the Whitshanks, their shared stories and long-held secrets, all the unguarded and richly lived moments that combine to define who and what they are as a family."

No mention of the color blue, but mentions of yellow and green?

3. "Finders Keepers"

My synopsis: First of all, this is by Stephen King so who really knows what this is about. So there's a book and blood. Whoever finds the book / mysterious object wins, I guess. But why does it have to be so bloody?

Actual synopsis: This a series too. (The second book.) And I couldn't make sense of the synopsis, so, sorry.

4. "Girl Waits With Gun"

My synopsis: "Girl Waits With Gun" sounds like something every woman has done. (I'm kidding.) But based on this cover, it looks like Daisy from "The Great Gatsby" is back and ready for revenge.

Actual synopsis:

"A novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nation’s first female deputy sheriffs.

Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared."

So, basically, I need to read this.

5. "Magic Shifts"

My synopsis: Does the magic shift from her to the lion? From the sword to her? Sword to lion? This author apparently also wrote "Magic Breaks," so I'm going to trust with her all this magic talk. Based on this cover, this book is a really cheesy, trying-too-hard kind of book.

Actual synopsis:

"After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate —former Beast Lord Curran Lennart — are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Curran misses the constant challenges of leading the shapeshifters.

So when the Pack offers him its stake in the Mercenary Guild, Curran seizes the opportunity — too bad the Guild wants nothing to do with him and Kate. Luckily, as a veteran merc, Kate can take over any of the Guild’s unfinished jobs in order to bring in money and build their reputation. But what Kate and Curran don’t realize is that the odd jobs they’ve been working are all connected.

An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it — before it takes their city apart piece by piece."

6. "The Deal"

My synopsis: Ah yes, the romance section. This is "The Deal." I'm just giggling looking at the cover and really, really don't know how to feel. Does this dude, let's call him Jeb, make a deal with some mistress like in "50 Shades of Grey?" Maybe he's a stripper. All in all, this cover has me wanting to know what is going on here.

Actual synopsis :

"She's about to make a deal with the college bad boy...
Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she's carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush's attention, she'll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice...even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.
...and it's going to be oh so good
All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he's worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he's all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn't take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn't going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him."

I have nothing to say.

7. "Deep"

My synopsis: These covers honestly couldn't be any more perfect to judge. Like what is even happening here? First of all, I haven't seen tattoos like that in so long that I'm going to assume this takes place in like, 1998. And it's called "deep" which is a word I really don't like. (Also this is the last in a series of four, so we have some catching up to do.)

Actual synopsis:

"Positive. With two little lines on a pregnancy test, everything in Lizzy Rollins' ordinary life is about to change forever. And all because of one big mistake in Vegas with Ben Nicholson, the irresistibly sexy bass player for Stage Dive. So what if Ben's the only man she's ever met who can make her feel completely safe, cherished, and out of control with desire at the same time? Lizzy knows the gorgeous rock star isn't looking for anything more permanent than a good time, no matter how much she wishes differently.
Ben knows Lizzy is off limits. Completely and utterly. She's his best friend's little sister now, and no matter how hot the chemistry is between them, no matter how sweet and sexy she is, he's not going to go there. But when Ben is forced to keep the one girl he's always had a weakness for out of trouble in Sin City, he quickly learns that what happens in Vegas, doesn't always stay there. Now he and Lizzie are connected in the deepest way possible, but will it lead to a connection of the heart?"

8. "Thoughtful"

My synopsis: You know that emoji that looks to the side like he's over it? Yeah that's me with this cover. This book is part of the "Thoughtless" series but it's called "Thoughtful." Change of heart on the phrase, "Think before you speak." Maybe?

But by judging by this cover, I'm thinking this guy is working on his tan for summer. Much like I need to do.

Actual synopsis:

"Every story has two sides, and in this new book, the epic love story between Kiera and Kellan is shown through his eyes.
All Kellan Kyle needs is his guitar, and some clean sheets of paper. Growing up in a house that was far from a home, he learned a hard lesson: You're worthless. Now his life is comfortably filled with passionate music, loyal band mates, and fast women...until he meets her.
Kiera makes him ache for more. Makes him feel for the first time that he's worth more. But there's one problem — she's his best friend's girl.
Just when Kellan thought his emotional defenses were rock solid, Kiera's indecisive heart wreaks havoc on his soul, changing him forever. Losing Kiera is not an option."

9. "The Last American Vampire"

My synopsis: There's been so much speculation over what actually went down when this photo was taken that I wouldn't be surprised if the guy was actually a vampire. Anyways, I want to believe that this takes place around this event and that he actually survived being in the service because he was a vampire. Bam! History changed forever.

Actual synopsis:

"In Reconstruction-era America, vampire Henry Sturges is searching for renewed purpose in the wake of his friend Abraham Lincoln's shocking death. It will be an expansive journey that will first send him to England for an unexpected encounter with Jack the Ripper, then to New York City for the birth of a new American century, the dawn of the electric era of Tesla and Edison, and the blazing disaster of the 1937 Hindenburg crash. Along the way, Henry goes on the road in a Kerouac-influenced trip as Seth Grahame-Smith ingeniously weaves vampire history through Russia's October Revolution, the First and Second World Wars, and the JFK assassination. Expansive in scope and serious in execution, 'The Last American Vampire' is sure to appeal to the passionate readers who made Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter a runaway success."

That sounds freaking crazy.

10. "Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover"

My synopsis: This girl could be covering a lot of things. Like, is she a pirate? Stuck in a medieval times fair? I just don't know. I'm going to go ahead and guess that this is a part of a series based on "The Fourth Rule of Scoundrels." So, this woman has obviously been going on an epic journey and hopefully it's about to end because that sounds exhausting.

Actual synopsis:

"By day, she is Lady Georgiana, sister to a Duke, ruined before her first season in the worst kind of scandal. But the truth is far more shocking — in London’s darkest corners, she is Chase, the mysterious, unknown founder of the city’s most legendary gaming hell. For years, her double identity has gone undiscovered...until now.
Brilliant, driven, handsome-as-sin Duncan West is intrigued by the beautiful, ruined woman who is somehow connected to a world of darkness and sin. He knows she is more than she seems and he vows to uncover all of Georgiana’s secrets, laying bare her past, threatening her present, and risking all she holds dear..including her heart."

So, I hope we all learned here that while it can be fun to judge covers, they're not always true. This goes for book, people, cereals, everything.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
