As a journalism major, I’ve heard many negative and positive things about my career field of choice. While most of my family and friends have been supportive (thanks, guys, you all rock!) I’ve heard just as many negative remarks about the field of journalism, whether in person or on social media.
1. But isn’t that a dying field?
This question doesn’t really deserve an answer, but I will say this: go on any social media, turn on the T.V. or go just go on the Internet. The media are everywhere. Which I’m pretty sure is the opposite of dying.
2. Journalism majors aren’t smart.
NO. We may not be trying to cure the common cold but journalism majors are definitely not dumb. Everyone is intelligent in their own ways, and just because we may not match up to your standards of “smart” does not mean we are less intelligent.
3. That’s the ‘party’/easy major.
I do not work my butt off
4. You won’t be able to find a job.
Maybe you should worry more about yourself finding a job since you seem so busy worrying about everyone else. Also, last time I checked, my school has a 99 percent job placement rate for journalism majors. I’m pretty sure I’ll be okay.
5. You won’t make any money.
Well, since I’m sure I’ll be able to get a job that means (gasp!) I’ll be making money.
6. I hate the media.
Without the media, we wouldn’t know about the Zika virus, Donald Trump’s rude comments or who won whatever sports game last night. Don’t blame the bad things that happen around the world
Just like with every major, there will be people who will discourage you from pursuing what you really want. People will criticize your work and your ability. It’s up to you to keep pushing on every day and to keep improving on what you’re doing.
