" All Time Low," has been climbing the music charts, growing in popularity every day this past week. And the man behind the music? None other than Jon Bellion. From New York, Bellion has spent most of his life producing songs in his free time. But exactly why is his music so different from the rest? He takes risks in his songs, finding sounds and rhythms that have yet to be heard or explored.
Part of him being so unique is that he produces all of his music. Literally, all of it. He makes the beats, picks the sounds, and sings the words. Every little intricate part of every song was designed by him and only him. It's incredible because it takes a significant amount of time and effort to create a hit song, and this man has done it all by himself.
What's really so interesting about this artist, is how outspoken he is about his religion. Bellion is a profound Christian, and proud of it. It's to tell by a number of hidden meanings he throws into his music and how he vocalizes his past experiences. He may not be the "ideal" Christian figure that the religion wants to be represented by, but he is still genuine. For example, in his song "Maybe IDK" he says, "I guess if I knew his plans, I guess he wouldn't be God." I love this because he doesn't beat around the bush and is directly claiming his beliefs. It's different because other artists like to reference their faith instead of actually proclaiming it because no one wants their total "banger" of a tune classified as a gospel song. It's like everyone is afraid to taint their image, but Bellion ruthlessly goes for it.
Aside from religion, he also talks about real world problems and the pressures of growing up today. In his song "Morning In America" he says, "all the great expectations got all us imitating". He's confessing how hard it is to live up to certain standards, and it's amazing to see an artist be so open about it.
This is so interesting to me because, in today's mainstream media, most of the music that is being played on top 40 radio is either from artists who have built a strong name for themselves or just because the songs are catchy (meaning that they have no intrinsic value to them). There's little to no substance in today's music. But now with Jon Bellion entering the scene and climbing on the Billboard Charts, there's music that actually means something now. It's amazing being able to watch and an individual who literally put everything on the line be so successful.
Not only is he getting the recognition he deserves, but he's touring with Twenty One Pilots in 2017, which gives his music the opportunity to reach a new crowd. From the looks of it, Bellion is well on his way to selling out arenas in the near future.
