When most people first consider joining a sorority, a lot of times they start to think, “Oh yay! Now I’ll be able to go to all these events and parties!” or, “I can’t wait to wear those super cute letters,” or even, “I definitely want in on all those super cute t-shirts.” But little do people know before joining a sorority is that first, you’ll have so many t-shirts that you won’t know what to do with them all, and second, the relationships you are about to make are beyond priceless. Sororities are where you get the chance to make friendships that really last a lifetime.
I was absolutely clueless when I decided to go through recruitment. I pretty much didn’t know what a sorority was. I didn’t have anyone in my family who was in any or knew of any friends yet that were in one. However, once I walked into that room full of women who I now call my sisters, on the first night of recruitment, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of.
Joining a sorority is like adding a home away from home. My Little, Big, Grand-big, Aunt, and Grand-Aunt are all considered to be just as important as family to me. Being away at college, having this second family is invaluable. Before I went through recruitment, I never would have expected the extent of these relationships, and now, I would not trade them for anything.
By being a part of a sorority there is always have a large lifeline of sisters to reach out to. It’s comforting to have that support and always know your sisters are there for you. Having my sisters to support me means the world to me.
It is also exciting to be a part of something larger. Connecting with alumnae and sisters at other colleges is one of the coolest things to me. I absolutely love being out somewhere and having someone approach me to tell me they recognized my letters and that we’re sisters.
I feel like sororities, in general, can get a bad rap a lot of times because of stereotypes. That’s just a shame because joining one was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
With recruitment just around the corner, I encourage anyone reading this that hasn’t found their home yet and has any doubts or hesitations, to go through recruitment. Once you find your home, there is so much to gain that you don’t even realize it yet.
