Why You Should Join A Professional Fraternity

So! Many! Brothers!

Why You Should Join A Professional Fraternity

Sometimes people laugh at when I tell them I'm in a fraternity.

But it's one of the things I'm most proud of in my life and I love being a part of the Alpha Kappa Psi brotherhood! Joining a professional fraternity on campus (and *cough* the best one on campus) was the best decision I've made in college. Why should you join?

1. It's co-ed and you get to meet a ton of guys and girls you might normally meet in a social fraternity or sorority.

I love being with all my girls a ton, but there's something about when you go to college, you lose a lot of those guy friends. I've loved getting to make close friendships with guys and girls of all grades in AKPsi.

2. You bond over common values of ambition.

I might not be super close with every single person in my business fraternity, but we all share the value of wanting to be the best person in our field and accomplish our goals. I know I can count on any one of them to go an extra step if I needed help on something.

3. They're pretty dang smart.

I know I can reach out to any of my brothers that had actual accounting internships this summer for help in my accounting class. They're the best of the best, so of course they're going to know way more than anyone else ever will.

4. They become the best of friends.

Our pledging process is intense in that you spend many mornings with these people and know their quirks and strengths and weaknesses. They've seen me while freaking out about an interview and know how to be supportive for anything else in life.

5. You know you're being productive toward your future.

I know I can walk into any interview or networking reception and be my best self. There's nothing better than knowing that all the hours you put into an amazing organization will pay off in the future.

6. You become brothers with thousands of other people across the world.

It's easy to forget that there are more people than just the ones in your chapter, but your professional fraternity will create instant relationships with other people across the world. Turns out that my grandfather is even a brother of mine. Who knows? It might even help you get a job.

7. You still have fun.

Who says the fun has to stop when you come to something professional? I love hanging out with my brothers on the weekends and all time in between.

8. You'll have a brotherhood for life.

It doesn't stop when school is over or you've graduated: these connections you make will last you a lifetime.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
