This year’s political race has been marred by constant bickering between candidates of both political parties, both behind the scenes and in the public eye. While we can only hope that each candidate has good intentions in mind, sometimes it can seem like the presidential debates are more of a sparring match than what they should be, which is an opportunity to learn about where the potential nominees stand on issues of policy.
If we can’t expect the nominees to act in a civilized way among one another, how can we imagine any one of them to be able to do their best as president in a time of crisis? Of course most, if not all, of the nominees have demonstrated their ability by having positions that have prepared them for what may lie ahead. With that said, it’s hard to take any of them seriously when they are fighting like cats and dogs. Maybe that’s why many people don’t watch the debates or any other such televised political event, in order to avoid the unnecessary insults, which most of the time, serves as entertainment more than anything else.
As recorded by CNN, at a recent campaign event, John Kasich brought a rare sense of humility to the presidential race, when he hugged a supporter who confided in him about his troubles. As the young man spoke, the crowd remained silent and soon after he finished, Kasich walked up to him and gave him a warm hug. Following their touching embrace, he went back up to the stage and touched on the importance of connecting with each other, especially in times of great struggle.
"I've heard about the pain of people all across this country, and what I've learned is we're going too fast in our lives," Kasich said. "Let's care about one another and not be disconnected and together we will rise this country."
I commend Kasich for doing this, firstly because it shows his compassion, and secondly, it shows he really cares about where the people of this country stand. His gesture most of all paints a picture of what he is like behind the cameras, and how he is as an actual human being. This kind of spontaneous action, has been sadly missing from what we have been seeing, and honestly it’s a breath of fresh air.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I doubt anyone would want someone in office who acts like a robot. Instead we want someone who can act compassionately in times of crisis, and also one who can let loose during our victories, no matter whether they are large or small. I’m not sure if Kasich is the answer to those wishes, or if anyone else is for that matter, but I am certainly pleased that I was able to witness that intimate moment. Despite not being there in person, I was still visibly moved by his gentle gesture.
