Let's say you found yourself in a complex of all 30 Major League Baseball teams' merchandise stores. It turns out that you have just enough money on your gift card to this jersey mecca to buy one player's jersey from each team. It could take some serious consideration and planning to pick out which to buy, or even muster the will to buy certain ones (e.g. any Mets garb). But for the sake of the article, you buy one jersey from each team. Here's what you should walk out with:
Los Angeles Angels: Albert Pujols
Though Mike Trout is no doubt the leader of his team, Pujols deserves the most celebration over his career. With a lifetime batting average above .300, the presumably next member of the 600 homerun club is a can't miss in the Angels' store.
Houston Astros: Jose Altuve
As he stands tall at five-foot-six, splurging on a game-worn Altuve jersey might not be the best idea, but that is not to say a slightly larger size is not worth the buy. The second baseman is impossible to get out, especially in away ballparks, where he is averaging .421 this year. Altuve makes the most of his small strike zone and then some, and should be a perennial MVP candidate for quite some time.
Oakland Athletics: Coco Crisp
This is a tough choice. On other teams, first-class names-that-are-also-words, like Sonny Gray, Rich Hill and Billy Butler would steal the show, but Coco Crisp edges each of them out for the top spot.
Toronto Blue Jays: Edwin Encarnacion
The Major League RBI leader is just too good to miss out on. In case you were wondering, his middle name is Elpidio: Edwin Elpidio Encarnacion.
Atlanta Braves: Shae Simmons
No one is very exciting on the current Braves team, so go for Shae Simmons' number 65 jersey. Maybe people will think it is an Andrelton Simmons from the good old days of 2015.
Milwaukee Brewers: Jonathan Lucroy
Lucroy, for the past few years, has been one of the three best catchers in the Major Leagues. He is a master at framing a pitch and can shine with his bat at a game's most important moment as well.
St. Louis Cardinals: Carlos Martinez
Carlos Martinez is the next ace of the Cardinals' pitching staff. He had a great start to the season and has been nearly unhittable on the outside part of the plate. At just 24 years old, a Martinez jersey could serve a fan well for another decade or more.
Chicago Cubs: Anthony Rizzo
Of an entire infield that started the All-Star Game for the National League, first baseman Anthony Rizzo is no doubt the leader. Rizzo is also one of the best at his position, so his jersey is a must from the Cubs' store.
Arizona Diamond-Backs: Paul Goldschmidt
Like Mr. Rizzo, Paul Goldschmidt is one of the game's best first basemen. He leads a team that does not have the backup talent that Rizzo has in Chicago, so a Goldschmidt jersey is an even easier decision than a Rizzo one.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw
Kershaw is the best player in baseball right now, and perhaps in this generation. Any mortal would be beyond fortunate to have a Kershaw jersey, so don't pass it up on this occasion.
End of Part 1
This is the first installment of a three-part set that will cover all 30 MLB teams. The next parts will come out within the next several weeks.
