A jaguar was killed Monday after it escaped its handlers at an Olympic torch relay event. Unnecessary and just sad. Turns out the relay event through the Jungle Warfare Instruction Center Zoo. I can't think of a better way to commemorate a fierce competition showing off athletic prowess than a chained creature. I can imagine the only thing said about doing this was "great photo opportunity" and "it'll look cool." So it escaped and was shot with a tranquilizer which failed to stop the animal. A single pistol shot killed the jaguar after it lunged at a soldier.
Why did a jaguar in chains have to be there? Why is this a thing? Why is Brazil hosting the Olympics?
There's a lot to say about corruption. The sports industry is a huge business and very lucrative for the businessmen who run it. This year's summer Olympics will be hosted in Brazil 38 different venues in different cities. Much is to be said about Brazil and corruption, especially after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. According to Business Insider, the country spent $15 billion on the World Cup alone - and there's plenty of places that money would have been better spent!
Brazil has loads to boast about, at least. From the exotic Zika virus to having the second worst economy. Truly a great place that should be spending that kind of money.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone traveling to Brazil to take steps and prevent bug bites. I wish it stopped at that, but it does not. There aren't any vaccines or medicines available to combat Zika. It's literally just up to people to prevent themselves from getting it. It can be transmitted sexually from a man, so the biggest protection you have is a condom or as the CDC recommends, don't have sex. Right.
Yes, it could be worse for the country. Seems like the games are going through, but in 2014 even the Olympic bosses were worried about Brazil. "The International Olympic Committee Vice President John Coates has called Brazil’s preparations 'the worst I’ve experienced'" This jaguar incident should just be a reminder about the world's state of affairs. It's all dandy for the government officials pumping billions of dollars of a country to benefit the subsidiaries afterwards.
It's just mind-blowingly stupid that Brazil just seems to have these infrastructure problems —
everyone knows why — and everyone just either deals with it or decides to go somewhere else. There's not an overnight solution to this, but if I could stop reading about Brazil's wayward life and politics being so terrible, that'd be fantastic.
