I've Never Been To Disney

And I don't find Disney magical.

Most Puerto Ricans take the yearly vacation to Disney or “Dijni". They may be broke as hell but somehow when it comes to seeing Mickey, the pockets get full faster than Culson. When I was little I used to hear my friends say “I went to Disney” when the teacher asked what we did in the summer, and the closest I could get to that was when I went to "La Feria" in December, which was once.

I’ve never been to this magic place, I’ve never seen Mickey, never have been on one of the rides, and by the way don’t try to talk to me about how Tower of Terror is better than that other ride because I have no idea of what you’re talking about. I’ve never seen an actual Disney princess, or had my autograph book signed, never over paid for a bottle of water and never had Mickey shaped food. I’ve never been to Magic Kingdom, and I don’t ever want to go because I am a straight believer that animals should live in their own habitat and I don’t think that a giraffe was born to live in Florida’s weather. I don’t have a picture in front of the castle and have never worn Minnie ears.

I don't see Disney as this amazing place where anything can happen and I believe there are cooler places on earth like the underground rivers of Mexico or Gilligan Island. See, we don’t have the need to go on vacations because we live in an island where it's summer all the time. Most people think Puerto Rico has nothing to do other than go to the beach; they’re wrong. Here in Puerto Rico you can do pretty much anything. Yes, you can’t play with the leaves in autumn or build snowmen in winter, but we have a lot more than you may think. We have amazing caves, rivers, zip lining, rainforests, dry forests and the list goes on. For that I don’t feel a need to go to Disney.

I feel Disney is overrated and you can have as much fun in other places without having to pay as much. I get anxious in overcrowded places so I think Disney is not for me. The only Disney I need in my life are Disney Channel Originals Movies (DCOM); those are life. Nothing better than to sing High School Musical or Cheetah Girls songs from the heart or binge watching Hannah Montana and still struggling on choosing between Jake and Jesse. I don’t want to go to Disney because I would rather use my money on something more productive than a couple of photos, something like my education. I rather use my money to buy my mom a gift or pay for my family's dinner that day, buy my brother the toy he’s been wanting for years or taking my sister out for ice cream to celebrate a good grade.

I rather use my money on something important.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
