In the days following the recent election there have been many people expressing many different feelings. There are some people out there who are quite happy with the results of the election, and have taken it upon themselves to express it in some unconventional (and sometimes horrible) ways. There are also many people who are in America who are wrought with fear, disdain and hopelessness. The events that have transpired in the past few days, and will most likely continue to happen over the span of the next few weeks, have caused many groups of people to lose faith in the government and have brought people to tears. They're afraid of what is going to happen next. Afraid of if they're going to be harassed out on the street. If there's going to be more violence than ever before towards minorities.
There are many different reactions to be had with this sort of thing. Many people have become so shocked and afraid that they just weep and stay in their homes. Some people didn't go to their schools and work spaces out of fear of harassment and violence. And there are also people so angry that they have taken to the streets and expressed their disapproval in either peaceful protests or a violent riots. In Portland there was a protest that turned into a full on riot where there was a huge amount of damage caused and properties destroyed. While that may not have been the intentions for everybody that went to go protest, it is a reality that we all have to face.
For those that don't know what to do, there is one huge thing that is simple and can help to make things better for future generations. That thing is to go out and try and unify this country. This election has shown everybody that our country is more divided than ever. There are such deep rooted political and traditional views imbued into so many people that they are not willing to compromise. People would rather never work with someone from the other party to make a compromise if it means giving up some of their values to make everybody happy. We need to break party lines in order to make sure that this world is better off and not worse off. There is only one way to make sure that it is possible we can have a better future while still maintaining the present. It's time for people to act. We've probably all seen what the power of community can do in our own lives, whether it is your family, church group, friends-- whatever it may be, things always work better and more efficiently when everybody is on the same page, even if not everybody completely agrees on everything.
