There is no written law that says you have to have a boyfriend/girlfriend on Valentine's Day. In fact, I personally think it is idiotic.
Yes, I have had a “valentine” ever since I was a sophomore in high school. And yes, this is the first year in four years that I will be single on this couples holiday, but from what I’ve learned from always having a valentine is that it really is okay to not have one.
Yes, it’s exciting to get dressed up and go out, but there is no intimacy. Everyone and their mother (literally) is rushing for that same reservation as you, heading into that same rom-com and purchasing cards and candy last minute; and honestly, what make Feb. 14 any different than Feb. 15?
If you have feelings for that person, date night should be every night, and gifts should be given because you want to, not because some date on the calendar says you have to.
So for all of you single on Valentine’s day, look at is as a blessing. Buy that extra-large box of chocolate for yourself, select your favorite movie from Netflix, order as much take-out as you want, put on your comfy pants, open that cheap bottle of wine and enjoy the day, just as it was any other day of the week.
Your person will come eventually so there is no use in being sad like I have said, It’s just another date on the calendar. It’s not pathetic to be alone on Feb. 14, it’s pathetic to be upset about it.
But of course, if you do have that special someone celebrate it if you wish. I’m all about the love. I love, love just as much as the next person, but don’t feel any less of yourself for being single. It’s okay. I’m just as single as you are. And if I can do it, so can you.
So don’t be pre-occupied stalking your ex’s and best friends dates on Instagram, what good is that going to do? Make this day about pleasing you, because honey you deserve it. So don’t worry about being single on valentine’s day, because one day, you won’t be.
