This is something that I struggle with every day. Not knowing the future and dying to know what life has in store for me drives me crazy on a daily basis. After giving it some thought, I came to realize that there’s no reason to be so wrapped up in the unknown, and here’s why:
1. Not knowing what exciting things are to come is the best feeling ever. All of life’s possibilities and opportunities are laid out in front of me, and are mine for the taking. Being able to look forward to the great milestones is a blessing in itself, and daydreaming about how my life will unfold is thrilling.
2. It’s OK to change your major a few hundred times. I’ve gone back and forth between minors or double majors so many times I’ve lost count. And here I am, still with an undecided minor. And it’s OK with me because I have at least six more years of college ahead of me. We do not have to have a perfect and detailed schedule of how our college education will go. Things change, like your major or minor, and then that plan is changed. We should enjoy the moments we have during our college experience instead of worrying about what graduate program looks like it would be the best fit for us.
3. Living in the moment is one thing I’ve learned the most throughout my freshman year of college. Time flies by and it’s good to let loose and have a great time with your friends. Sometimes its good to stay out until 3 a.m., nap all day, or spend all the money you don’t have on unnecessary things. We can do these things while we’re young because we don’t have it all figured out yet and we don’t have a solid plan for after graduation. But why spend those years leading up to it by not making the best memories of your life? Take advantage of this time in your life when you are not completely an adult with bills to pay, instead of worrying about where you will go next.
4. You know what they say about “best laid plans” … Well, things change, people change, and circumstances change. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. Having a plan is always the responsible route, but realistically, planning your whole future and timing out where you will be in life at an exact age or time is clearly a waste of time. It is all unknown no matter how much you try to plan it. Just as life’s circumstances change, circumstances change people. The person you are today as a young man or lady is most likely not the person you will be at 30! Maturing can result in being a somewhat different person. You might have the same desires and hobbies, but you’ll be more responsible. These desires can motivate you to do your very best, but it shouldn’t force you to plan every detail.
5. Our desires can’t be reached without going through your life path. It’s OK that it is not all planned out because the exciting part is yet to come; when you finally reach your goals.
So take that cash you found in an old purse or pair of jeans and put it towards a spontaneous trip to the mall or the beach. Live it up and don’t worry about the unknowns of life. The best part of being young is being able to look forward to so much.
