I am by no means a Scrooge or a Grinch. Christmas is by far my favorite time of year, and I love the holiday season in general. But why in the world do we have to start celebrating Christmas in November? Why is Thanksgiving so irrelevant that the day after Halloween every store switches to Christmas decorations? And more importantly, why do people think it's OK to start singing Christmas carols now? It's not. Please stop.
Like I said, I love the holidays as much as anyone else, but I hate the build-up. I'm already stressing about what to get my family for Christmas. My shopping carts on several websites are already filled with ideas. But why am I even thinking about this? I keep having to remind myself that Christmas is still over a month away, that I shouldn't be buying gifts yet, because chances are by the time Christmas comes, my sister will have decided she doesn't want that ugly patterned dress that she thought was "so in" last month.
In New York City, they're already preparing to put the tree up in Rockefeller Center. The Macy's Day Parade hasn't even happened yet, and we're already on to the next holiday, because we can never be too prepared, right? Two weeks ago I went to Michael's to pick up some last-minute Halloween supplies. Stepping into the store, you would've thought it was December already, as the whole place was decked out in red and green. I found the Halloween stuff in a little corner, shoved out of the way to make room for the Christmas explosion that had happened. Needless to say, being an elf would have been a way easier option than trying to find anything actually Halloween related.
My other question is what's wrong with Thanksgiving? I mean, yeah, it's not a holiday as exciting as Christmas. We don't give Thanksgiving gifts and there's no Santa Claus figure climbing down our chimneys to give us presents on Turkey Day. But why can't we show Thanksgiving a little love? It's a holiday to spend with your family and to be thankful for what you have. I think Thanksgiving deserves a little more attention than it currently gets (also because my personal opinion is that Thanksgiving dinner is way better than Christmas dinner).
So please, show Thanksgiving a little love, and remember: It's only November. We have plenty of time to celebrate Christmas when it's actually the month of December. Wait until ABC Family's "25 Days of Christmas" starts before you begin celebrating. And please stop with the carols. I can't put up with this for two more months.
