"Girl, take your hair out!"
"Wear it down!"
"I like when you leave it curly!"
"Wow, those braids are the most neat I've seen it!"
"How do you wash that?"
"Do you go out like that???"
No, it's not your hair.
I get a lot of compliments about my hair, but I also get an extreme amount of grief from it. I know, you can't make everyone happy. . . but when it comes to my hair, it only matters if I'm happy. Some days I wake up and want to have it in a puff on the top of my head. Other days I want to braid it up and pin it back. I could slick it back into a bun, straighten it, blow it out, dye it, so on and so forth.
No, it's not your hair.
You didn't take 20 years of your life telling it to relax only to ask it to be natural some years later. It's not your hair because you don't have to wake up an hour before you normally would to tend to it. It's not your hair because you don't have to set aside an entire day to wash and de-tangle it. It's not your hair because you don't grow biceps from combing and brushing. It's not your hair because you don't have to buy hundreds of dollars in hair products, only to find out that coconut oil is the only thing that works. It's not your hair because you don't get fired from your workplace because of it. It's not your hair because yours isn't deemed "unprofessional." It's not your hair because people don't ask to touch it every five seconds. It's not your hair because yours doesn't grow out, it grows down. It's not your hair because you don't get to watch some inexperienced stylist cut it while its kinky. Its not your hair because you don't work out everyday and sweat it out. It's not your hair because you didn't buy it. It's not your hair because you didn't braid it up last night. It's not your hair because your knots didn't come out right. It's not your hair because its not on top of your head.
