For as long as I can remember, it has been an ongoing debate weather stores should be open on Thanksgiving for an early start to Black Friday Shopping. Last year, in 2015 many stores opened as early as 6:00 P.M. on Thanksgiving day.
It is called Black FRIDAY, not Black Thanksgiving Dinner. It is ridiculous that stores would make their employees skip out on a holiday dinner to work. The point of Thanksgiving is to take a day away from work, and all of the stresses of life to focus on all of your blessings. This should be done by sitting around a dinner table with family and friends eating Turkey, and reminiscing on all of the good that’s going on.
This year, some stores decided to do the right thing, and let their employees stay home on Thanksgiving day to enjoy the holiday. Stores such as A.C. Moore, Burlington, Christmas Tree Shop, DSW, Game Stop, Home Goods, Ikea, Lowes, Marshalls, Nordstrom, TJ Maxx and more have decided to stay closed on Thanksgiving Day 2016.
The Mall of America is one of the largest malls in America and employs close to 15,000 people. For the first time, they have decided to remain close on Thanksgiving. The mall has over 500 stores, which have the option to open, but hopefully they will realize that this is a holiday made for family, not for shopping. The mall will open at 5 A.M. Friday morning.
As the Mall of America is a widely known mall within the country, hopefully other malls will follow in their footsteps and wait to open until Friday morning. My local mall, the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford CT, has decided to do relatively the same thing. It is understood that the businesses would want to open as soon as possible to bring in money, but I still don’t think that is any excuse for ripping someone away from a holiday meant to be spent with family. Even stores opening at midnight would be more acceptable, as employees going into work at 11 P.M. is nothing compared to 5 P.M. right during dinner time.
I am glad to hear that stores and mall are starting to reevaluate their decision to open so early on Thanksgiving day. Lets think, if you worked in retail would you wanna go into work at 5:00 P.M. on a holiday? Probably not.
