Last week, I encouraged everyone to speak the words they have been dying to say, without fear of what people might think. There can be so many unknown anxieties in being honest and truthful in our words, and even in our actions. I believe there's more to say on this rather than just telling you to get out there and speak the truth.
When things don't work out our way, they hurt. Like the pretty badass John Green said, it's because it matters. I believe it's human nature--we can't help but grow attachments to people and places and things. It happens, as naturally as anything else. I, for one, fall in love too easily with people. I mean this even platonically. I fall in love with their honesty or laugh or presence.
Humans are scared. We have silly fears like spiders or monsters under our beds. We have the reflex to be careful who we trust and to act cautiously. Deep down, something scares all of us. If not, I encourage you this week to get a fear. While it makes you vulnerable, I wouldn't want to be completely fearless. Fortune might favor the bold, but we all need something or someone we are afraid to lose.
Gain the vulnerability to give someone a few pieces of yourself to hold onto. Speak the truth to them. It might not come easy, but it is important. It matters more than the small talk. More than the weather. More than what their major is or when they have class.
Empower yourself by speaking hard truths. People will leave because of themselves, not because of you.
