The speech Oprah Winfrey gave at the Golden Globes was inspiring. It was a speech we, the American people and women, have been yearning for since Hillary’s concession speech 1 year ago. Inspiring is just one way to describe it. Some could call it moving, motivational, stimulating, even presidential when compared to what we normally hear from the president.
Everyone loves Oprah. This does not mean, however, that Oprah should run for president in 2020. Here are some of the reasons I am against this.
The American presidency is, or used to be, the most important job in the world. And yes, while Oprah is more smart, classy, and coherent than Donald Trump, she doesn’t have any political experience. We need a person who knows what they are doing. It is also an extremely stressful job. You are responsible for American lives day in and day out.
The decisions you make not only affect your family, but every single family in America, and sometimes the world. The presidency is not, and should never be, a glorified title like the Royal Family. We need to get back to the time when these types of candidates were jokes, and removed from reality.
One thing I loved about Hillary Clinton, and yes there were many things I loved about Hillary, was that she was born to be president. She not only had government experience, but she was also extremely smart, sometimes to a fault. She is also persistent, and from her work in the Senate, she was able to work with Republicans in order to get things done. Whether they would have worked with her is a question we will never know the answer to.
At least I knew, and 65 million other people, trusted that she would be there when the country needed her the most. I could say the same thing about the other Republican candidates as well. If Jeb Bush had won the nomination, and then the presidency, we would still be in good hands. I thought this about all the other candidates, except for Ted Cruz, because that guy is crazy in my opinion.
Oprah is smart, considerate, and I’m sure her political leanings align more with mine than do Trump’s, but she is also a billionaire, T.V. star. We need to elect everyday working American’s who know what it is like to be a working American. The presidency is not an office that should be about the person who sits in it.
The president is supposed to work for the American people, not for their specific brand. So, Oprah, The Rock, George Clooney, America loves you, but please do not run for office. Feel free to donate, endorse, work for a campaign by phone banking or knocking on doors, whatever you feel you need to do in order to help better this nation.
The last reason why I do not want Oprah to run for office is because I do not want the rates on my Weight Watchers membership to go up. That’s a joke, but for real. Resist.
