An Open Letter To Myself

To My 14 Year Old Self,

You're starting high school soon and let me tell you that things are going to go by fast. These next four years are going to be the start of something. You're probably going to miss out on a few things here and there because of homework and work in general but it will all be worth it in the end. You're going to change your outlook on your future as you go through your high school years, but change is always a good thing so do be afraid to change anything. You're also going to make a lot of memories with your friends and classmates. You're going to work hard to achieve your spot on the varsity tennis team and you're going to work hard to stay towards the top of your class. You're probably going to be exhausted some of the time, well probably most of the time, but remember that it will all be worth it in the future.

To My 18 Year Old Self,

You've just graduated high school a few months ago and college starts next month. I know you're nervous to start a new school and not know anyone there but you have to put yourself out there a little bit. Just keep your head up and you'll make friends. Remember you're a nice, friendly person so making friends shouldn't be an issue. I can almost guarantee you that you'll make a best friend your first day on classes, so watch out for that special person. I'm also going to bring you in on a secret, you're going to make a lot of changes and decisions on what you want to do with your life and your future career. You're also going to spend a lot more time in school than you ever thought you would, so when people tell you that your college years go by fast, take it with a grain of salt. Your first couple years in college are going to go by fast and you're going to learn a lot about yourself and others. You're going to make mistakes as well but what you do after those mistakes are going to define who you truly are.

To My 21 Year Old Self,

Well, let's see here, you're starting your senior year of college and you've realized you still have three more years before you graduate. I know you wish you could have figured out what you wanted to do with your life when you first started but if you did you would have missed out on so many other things. You would not have met your college best friend, you would not have made the same friends, and you would not have had the same experiences. Let me just say that I know you're frustrated with yourself and you're exhausted as well but remember that everything is going to work out in the end. You're going to look back on your college experiences and you're going to love them, all of them.

To My Present Self,

I know you have bad days now and then, and you've been having more of them lately because of the summer you've had but you have to remember that everything you go through is for a reason. You have to trust that you can handle whatever is put in your path and that nothing is going to completely break you. You are strong and you are a fighter, don't let the small things get to you. You are going to make it through this and you're going to make it through life. Keep working hard towards that impressive degree of yours at school and know that you're more than half way done to graduation. Take everyday with a grain of salt, but most importantly take every day one at a time.

Sincerely,

Your Older Wiser Self

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
