Ithaca's Odyssey: Meet Our Writer, Madison Barlow!

Ashley Brilla: Why IC?

Madison Barlow: I choose Ithaca because of the communications program mainly. I didn't even know that about IC until my dad found it and researched it. I came to check it out and loved it, so that's why I'm here.

AB: Why did you want to write for Odyssey?

MB: I thought it was really cool that Ithaca had an Odyssey because I had always read Odyssey articles. I had hoped that when I came to college I could be a part of it, so when I found out we did have one, I couldn't wait to join. I think it's really cool that you can show you're personality.

AB: What is your favorite article you've written?

MB: The resting bitch face article was really fun to write!

AB: What is your major and why did you choose it?

MB: I am an IMC major. When I was looking at the communications program, they didn't have a major for PR, which is what I want to go into. I looked into IMC and found that I liked it even better.

AB: What is your favorite class you've taken at IC?

MB: My seminar is really, really fun! I'm in "Social Media And You" with Kyle Woody, and it's just a different kind of classroom environment.

AB: What is your dream job?

MB: In a perfect world, I would have been a super successful playwright. I want to work for a non-profit organization doing their PR. I think that non-profits are kind of forgotten, so I'd like to help out with that.

AB: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

MB: Anywhere in Europe. I went to Italy my junior year of high school and fell in love with it. I really want to go back there. I want to go to Ireland. Yeah, all of Europe!

AB: What's your favorite thing to do in Ithaca?

MB: I love all the gorges and hiking trails. I love being outside, so those are really fun.

AB: What is your favorite place to eat at in Ithaca?

MB: I went to the Ithaca Ale House over parents weekend and it was a life-changing experience.

AB: Coffee or Tea?

AB: Cats or Dogs?

AB: Night owl or early bird?

AB: What's your favorite book?

AB: What's your favorite movie?

MB: I don't watch a whole lot of movies, but "Harry Potter."

AB: Favorite TV show?

AB: Who would play you in a movie?

MB: In a perfect world, I would be British, so Emma Watson.

AB: If you could have a drink with any famous person dead or alive, who would you pick?

MB: Well it would be water because I'm not old enough. This is a little weird, but Abe Lincoln. I'm a history buff and I love the Civil War era.

AB: What advice would you give yourself before coming to college?

MB: Probably, get a lot of internships to figure out what you want. Oh... and get a job ASAP!

AB: What is your cause?

MB: I have a lot of causes, but I'm really big on gender equality. Also with everything that is happening in Paris and Lebanon right now, we need world peace.

AB: What is your life motto?

MB: My friends and I actually came up with a motto and its peace, love, and honesty!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
