"There are those who believe in my innocence and there are those who believe in my guilt. There's no in-between. And if I am guilty, it means that I am the ultimate figure to fear because I'm not the obvious one. But on the other hand, if I'm innocent, it means that everyone is vulnerable and that's everyone's nightmare." - Amanda Knox
These are the opening words from Netflix's new documentary tittled, "Amanda Knox."
The documentary aired on September 30, 2016 and follows the trials of American college student, Amanda Knox, who was studying abroad in Perugia, Italy at the time and Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. The pair were convicted and then acquitted of the murder of Knox's roommate, British college student, Meredith Kercher. Kerchief was fatally mudered in the home she shared with Knox on November 1, 2007.
Directed by Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn, this documentary is Italy's " Trial of the Century." It is told by media outlets as a tale of murder, sex and school trip gone wrong. Knox was only 20 years old when she become the focus of what was an international witch0hunt that lasted nearly a decade. The documentary focuses on how powerful the media can be and how Knox was already guilty before receiving a proper conviction. They portray Knox as a "She-Devil", "Sex Crazed" and a "Man Eater"—a classic story of slut shaming and how being at the wrong place at the wrong time can have its reprecussions.
Blackhurst and McGinn do a great job of taking the audience through both sides of the story. With interviews from Knox herself, Rafaello Sollecito, prosecuter Giuliano Mignini, and freelance journalist Nick Pisa. They provide us with footage of media coverage of the eight years leading to their exoneration and evedince found at the scene of the crime. At the end, they leave us with the question, "did she or didn't she?" It lets us make up our own minds on wheather the decision the court made was the correct one. Amanda Knox is now streaming on Netflix, catch it for yourself.
