With new commentary towards North Korea, the United States veers on the brink of war.
Given recent developments in terms of military practices and defensive measures between both countries, the tension of war has consistently been high in the Korean Peninsula. However, recent developments by President Trump via the statements made regarding the issue, flare off signs of war with various nations around the world, painted as volatile. The targeted statements toward Iran and North Korea presented direct threats of war toward both nations.
Following a clear threat of hostility, Donald Trump warned of a complete elimination of North Korea if they continued imposing threats to neighboring countries or allies of the United States. Along with such threats, Trump also hinted at an end to deals with Iran, further generating an aura of hostility in regards to the prospect of foreign relations for the United States as presented to the world. The speech itself followed convention with Trump’s 'America First' rhetoric being the centerpiece of the speech. It was composed of volatile rhetoric in quintessential Trump fashion, with not much thought behind the statements.
Threatening the sovereignty of countries is not foreign to the international affairs of the United States. However, to mobilize the rest of the world in order to fulfill the political agenda of the United States represents explicit shades of imperialism that we have not seen as blatantly in recent years. The continuation of such political perspectives certainly does assert the United States as a global power, but it also reaffirms the submissive nature of the sovereign states under the gaze of the US. Such an ideology is evidently the primary catalyst for war, as well as the key reason for oppression writ large.
Gradually, our exposure to such political developments have set this to become the norm, yet what that entails is terrifying once we attempt to recognize it. Structures of power enforcing their agenda, without any contestation or regard for moral compasses, only allow us to be complacent to such developments. However, when done at a level of international politics, the voice of one author may not be much. The recognition of it is certainly important to understand the implications of such actions, instead of simply clinging to disguised words designed for delusion.
At this point, we can simply watch as the United States dabbles with World War III yet again.
