Is PCB Dead?

How has the drinking ban affected the spring break destination?

Is PCB Dead?

It's that time of the year again where people (mostly college kids) take their partying talents to Panama City Beach (PCB). With each new year, PCB gets bigger and wilder than the year before.

Spring break has drawn tens of thousands of young people to Panama City Beach each year for decades, with the number of students flocking to the island peaking during the MTV Spring Break era and again in 2015.

People will admit it's a fun time, but things get out of control when you're down there. Crimes such as robbery, rape, and assault go up tremendously according to neighborhood website. It's gotten so out of control the local authority and city officials have put a drinking ban throughout the city in hopes to reduce violent crimes. Due to these actions, college spring breakers say that PCB is now dead.

The impacts of the measure have been two-pronged. On one hand, it has significantly reduced the violence, crime and danger at the annual event. At the same time, it has driven many people to go elsewhere for spring break, taking their money with them and leaving the hotels, bars, restaurants and beaches far emptier than they were in 2015.

So far, Spring Break 2016 has proven to be a far tamer and less profitable beast than the crime-ridden bacchanalia that shocked the nation in March 2015. Panama City native Shekinah Washington said that a new ban on drinking on the beach in PCB has taken the fun out of spring break, according to Alabama media group webiste. It's a sentiment that people would express again and again over the past few days.

"Honestly, Spring Break is no more," Washington said. "There's no more Spring Break in Panama City, so I would suggest no one come."

This is evident this spring break as the number of college students in PCB is a small fraction of the visiting population last March, according to USA Today.

Locals and officials have been conflicted for years over Panama City Beach's reputation as being a wild college spring break destination, but for many, those feelings are reaching new heights. Panama City Beach Police called the spring break scene on the beaches "a war zone," saying that spring break crowds are bigger than ever and that more of the spring breakers are armed.

For most college students, spring break is about partying, and Panama City Beach has put a halt to the alcohol-fueled beach parties many kids are most attracted to when selecting a March destination.

So where will they go next?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
