Hurricane Irma Wrecked My Semester GPA

I may not have sustained any physical damage, but that doesn't mean my GPA hasn't.

Hurricane Irma hit Florida State University in what would have been our second week of school, continuing the apparent tradition for a week of 'hurrication' at the start of every schoolyear (remember Hurricane Hermine last year? RIP). Thankfully, Tallahassee did not sustain as much power damages as last year so everything returned back to normal the week after. But the after-effects of missing a whole week of school is probably hitting most students right now in the middle of the semester. Midterms are happening left and right, but I could have sworn Syllabus week just happened! Irma sure has impacted my semester more than I expected, but how did we get here?

1. It happened on a Friday afternoon. I got a text that classes had been cancelled for all of the following week due to Hurricane Irma. OH HAPPY DAY!

2. I began to plan out my spontaneous hurri-cation and can't wait to have a whole week to relax and catch up on Netflix/books/me time.

3. Towards the end of hurri-cation I begin to get frantic emails from professors fretting over how we will make up our material for the semester. However, I'm still chilling and have decided not to touch an ounce of schoolwork until the end of said hurri-cation.

4. The first week back. I've been hit by a brick wall of STRESS. Never have I felt more stressed during a week of school with no tests or exams, but the teacher's panic over how we would make up for lost time was starting to rub off on me.

5. Second week back, calmer now, but still dodging one bullet after another as deadlines seem to come up out of nowhere and smack me right in the face.

6. Teachers announce midterm exam dates. MIDTERMS. I FEEL LIKE WE JUST STARTED SCHOOL LAST WEEK.

7. Studying for MIDTERMS after just FOUR, yes FOUR weeks of classes has got me stressed. I start to think maybe a week really can make a difference in a semester, and that week of chilling at home might not have been worth the resulting sense of impending doom.

8. Coming to the realization that I just have to step up my game. If Floridians can joke about Naruto running into a supposed Category 5 hurricane, I can lighten up about my exams.

I can survive this storm of stress and schoolwork. Just a little bit longer, and I'll be fine. YOU CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT, WE GOT THIS!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
