Ireland Says Yes!

Ireland is the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. This was a 20-year development dating back to 1993 when the Irish government decriminalized homosexuality. It wasn't just a win, it was a landslide.

This makes Ireland the 21st country to legalize gay marriage despite the ruling powers of the Catholic Church. The preliminary referendum was held Friday, May 22. Within hours of the polls opening, conservatives had accepted their defeat. Experts claim nearly 60 percent of the 3.2 million eligible voters demonstrated their choice and 62 percent approved. A large part of the victory was influenced by the #HometoVote twitter campaign that encourages Irish natives living abroad to come back home to vote for the cause.

This is a monumental achievement in the LGBT community changing the landscape on how to vote for same-sex marriage. This victory already shows more acceptance here in the states according to Gallup with record high approval ratings.

The Supreme Court confronts the topic next month; could it be the final vote here in America?
