11 Introverted Things That Definitely Confuse Extroverts

It's not weird, it's just how I am.

Many people think of introverts as hermits who hate all social interaction and are super shy all the time. While that might be true in some cases, there is more to being an introvert than social awkwardness. I am on the introverted side of life, but I have a lot of friends who are extroverts. They are often confused with some of my mannerisms and tendencies, mostly because they just can't relate. Here's a list of things I do that leave the extroverts in my life scratching their heads:

1. Pretending to be asleep.

Giphy

Sometimes, it's just easier to be asleep than talk to people. Plus, as a kid, it meant I got carried to bed more often.

2. Being quiet when in a group of people.

Giphy

We're not necessarily shy, we just don't have to contribute to a conversation to show we are enjoying ourselves.

3. Going to the movies alone.

Giphy

If I want to see a movie, I don't have to wait for a group of friends to be free to go with me. I have no problem going to see a movie by myself, especially if it means I don't have to deal with people talking throughout the film.

4. Bringing a book to any and every social gathering.

Giphy

Sometimes, there's a lull in the conversation. Sometimes, I finish eating before other people and need something to do. It's not being rude, it's just a little way to escape the crowd if we have to.

5. Needing to have time alone.

Giphy

Unlike extroverts, I am drained after being around people for too long. I need some time by myself to recharge.

6. Staying home on a Friday night rather than going to a party with a ton of people.

Giphy

Sometimes we just need to pass on the outings. It's not unusual for me to plan a night in, and I am perfectly content with those plans.

7. Avoiding phone conversations if at all possible.

Giphy

Please, if you care about us at all, text us. I would rather use carrier pigeons to communicate than have a phone conversation.

8. Not being good at confrontation of any kind.

Giphy

Good or bad, I can't handle it. I don't even like going up to people when I'm on vacation and asking them to take a picture for me. If you are traveling with me, you can bet that you will be doing all the talking to people.

9. Doing absolutely nothing all weekend is an ideal weekend.

Giphy

Don't feel bad for me when I say I did absolutely nothing over the weekend. I had the time of my life doing it!

10. Takeout > Eating at a restaurant

Giphy

Sometimes we need to limit our social interaction. It's tiring going out to eat. I'd much rather take it home with me and eat there.

11. Saying we're busy when we mean we're watching Netflix.

Giphy

Don't be offended if we turn down plans to watch Netflix. Hanging out with friends is not always our first pick, especially if we have been around people a lot throughout the week.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
