Easter is the only "devotional pop" band out there with a song that quotes the Satanic Bible. The duo, composed of Stine Omar and Max Boss, has been active on the Berlin scene since dropping 2011's "Ur A Great Babe," an LP spanning sounds from trap to trip hop. Now with four releases under their belt, a bi-weekly gig at Berlin Community Radio, and the wrap of their serial drama, "Sadness is an Evil Gas Inside of Me," the band is focusing on touring and the upcoming release of "New Cuisine Pt. 2," the sequel to their 2014 EP. With all this buzz, one wonders if they still have time to tend the bar at Smaragd, a champagne exclusive hole-in-the-wall in Berlin's Mitte borough that inspired some of their earlier work.
Easter took the time to answer some questions for us, and their responses were as outrageous as you might expect, covering everything from allergen-filled last meals to traveling Russia together.
I was in Berlin recently and hit up Smaragd Bar, but was told you guys were in Cologne for a show—how did that go?
SO: It was fun. A bottle of Patrón, double cups of noodles and our boo Lotti in the backstage made it a wet and wild show with series of Kölsch, the Cologne beer special, being delivered to the stage and Max giving several shout outs to infamous Cologne culturals. How was your night at Smaragd Bar?
Pretty dope, I must say; great champagne, better vibes, and dope music. Speaking of, your music is labeled "devotional pop" on Bandcamp, but has more in common with shoegaze, rap, and trip-hop. Why label your sound this way?
MB: It's required to choose a label when you upload your music. We would not label it otherwise, as we like to leave this up to the audience. Devotional pop seemed cute enough at the time we registered.
With "Sadness is an Evil Gas Inside of Me" wrapping recently and "New Cuisine Pt. 2" being released in soon, have you guys been working on more new music or focusing on other projects?
SO: Starting to work on tracks for "New Cuisine Pt. 2" today after lunch.
MB: We’ve been gone a second from the music scene last year to finish this video project that took on ginormous measures. Now really happy to open Ableton again.
Your show on BCR is going well; what's your favorite part about Easter taking the airwaves?
SO: It was my childhood dream to have my own radio show. I used to record hours of "Stinetimen" on my tape player as soon as I got home from school; just talking about dogs and guinea pigs and singing improvised Christmas songs. It's strange how much harder it is to talk now that I am old and actually have an audience—we are still working on our radio voices. My favorite part might be to list the future specials and to make a party of every show, which is nice and easy with the cuties Anastazia and Sarah who run the station.
MB: I love that I can finally play all those playlists I’ve been fantasizing about for years. I love to have American guests in the studio who are really good at talking.
Your love for Berlin is apparent in everything you guys create; what about this city makes you call it home?
SO: Now I'm curious how that love is apparent, as I wasn't even aware of my love for it. But if there's one thing, it might be that we found each other here. The city is heavy enough to make a good base.
MB: It was always my home; I guess that's why it feels like home. I just like it.
Do you have plans to go on tour, maybe find your way to New York for a few shows?
MB: We’re always on tour, but stopping by home after every trip. Next up is Russia, and an extended stay in Paris to work on songs. All over Europe the rest of the year. It’s possible NY will happen again.
What's the biggest adventure you've both gone on together?
MB: It’s been a wild ride start to finish, but Russia in June promises to hold some special craze.
I know Stine is big on cooking, and you both met in a noodle shop; what would your last meal be?
SO: I like the concept of the last meal because when you know its gonna be your last you don't have to think about the consequences. If I was allergic to stuff, I would have a lot of that in there.
MB: The thought makes me very sad; I’m seriously in love with noodles. I got it from my mama, but she’s more into feinschmecker pasta and I'm more into glutamate instant.
Do you have any advice for our readers?
SO: Don't eat or wear animals.
MB: Relinquishment is fun.
Easter's "New Cuisine Pt. 2" comes out on June 5.
