A typical summer internship for college students usually consists of an unpaid desk job and filing paperwork for a company you don’t really care much about. Kelsey Clark, a senior JMC major at Samford University, did just the opposite. She searched for a job she knew she would love!
Kelsey spent the summer interning at her dream job! She worked as the Broadway Marketing Intern at Starlight Theater in Kansas City. Her job consisted of helping out with PR and marketing tactics for the Broadway shows. She experienced every side of Broadway. From writing press releases, pitching media ideas, and working back stage with the actors, Kelsey loved every minute of it!
“For me it was so cool because I got to combine my passion for music and performing arts with the marketing and business side of my major,” said Kelsey. “I was able to see what working in the entertainment industry was like and it also helped me narrow down what I would like to do for a career.”
Summer internships look really good on our resumes, so we usually just take the job regardless. Kelsey said, “I would encourage people to not take an internship just to take it but explore a position in a field that you can really see yourself enjoying. Look outside the box and just go for it because you never know how a unique internship will impact you or encourage you career wise.” She goes even further to say, “While you are in the job, put your best foot forward and take advantage of every opportunity given to you. Work outside your job description because that’s when you realize you have passion and skills that you didn’t know you had before.”
Kelsey took the time and effort to really search for an internship she would enjoy and it turned out great. One summer changed the way she looked at her future career and she now knows exactly what she wants to do when she graduates.
