With the growth of the internet and more specifically social media, fame is easier to achieve than ever before. But this can be good, bad or ugly for all of the people who aim for it.
A lot of us have considered it, “I could be a famous blogger or YouTuber.” Some people just want the attention, others think that the money made from advertising could be great or just being able to work from home.
Personally, I run my own YouTube channel. While I’ve thought about it, I’ve never been famous on there. I have less than a hundred subscribers, yet it is still plenty to me. When I say I’m not in it for the fame, it’s true. I know that one day I want to work in film because I love cinematography, and I also want to be able to put my word out there. I feel that it is important to share your knowledge, the things you’ve learned and advice on topics you’re versed in.
So when it comes to internet stardom, where can you go wrong?
Well, you have to deal with some crazy people out there. I hate to break it to you, but there are people out there who may become obsessed with you, whether they love you or they absolutely hate you. On top of that, there’s also the people who say and do weird things. Lots of YouTubers have P.O. boxes for fan mail. Imagine the number of disturbing things people must get in their P.O. boxes.
Then there’s bad things, like negative comments. It’s hard to not let things like that get to you. You can’t please everyone, and people will hate on you. Also, internet fame won’t last forever, there will be someone more hip, trendier and more interesting than you who will come along at some point. You still have to keep up creating content, which subscribers will eventually crave more of as you get more popular. Sometimes it can be hard to keep up with all of the demands that an audience puts on you.
None of that should deter you, though. For the first time in history, we all have a chance to express our voice. We are a generation rich in information, we can access more information than we could imagine. So, why not add our voices into the mix?
The fame isn’t important. Express yourself if you want, but do it for one reason: to help and inform. Even if it’s just to a small number of people, if you are just helping yourself or even if it helps you overcome a fear of expression or gives you an outlet.
The internet is a vast place, and while fame can be tricky, it also isn’t the most important thing out there. There are plenty of small time YouTubers who have powerful voices, some just haven’t picked up traction just quite yet.
Go ahead. You could be the next hit, and if not, at least you can say you did something. My only advice is to do it for yourself. Do it to help, benefit others, don’t accept failure and be careful.
