Being intentional: you’ve probably heard this buzzword in anything from day-to-day conversation to inspirational talks. Around my own college campus, I hear it all the time. “Wow, she is such an intentional friend, she’s always knows just what I need,” ”I need to be more intentional about getting into the Word,” or, “I wish he would be more intentional with me.” Perhaps you’ve heard these same statements as well that make intentionality into some ideal reserved only for the “super humans” of the world and that “regular” people can only strive for.
But what is intentionality really? Intentionality is something done on purpose. It is deliberate, intended and calculated. It is something that requires thought, desire, purpose and action. A lifestyle dedicated to intentionality is different because it is characterized by what you hold important.
So what kind of intentions should you have? Well, what’s important to you? Being intentional is something you carry out with how you manage everything from your time, money, relationships and career choices. But being intentional is not simply about what you’re doing; it’s about how you’re doing it.
1. In spite of life's busyness, take time for what’s important. This makes life more enjoyable.
2. Don’t complain about the problems you see in your life; create the change for a better situation. If it starts raining outside, you don't stand there and complain about being wet. Instead, you grab an umbrella or seek shelter. In the same way, if you have an issue with someone, ask them about it. If you don't like where your life is headed, do something different.
3. Know what you want and set goals. Being intentional when taking risks diminishes fear of trying.
4. Remember what’s important to you and make time for it. Putting real time and attention into real relationships creates depth and shows what you value.
5. Follow through and remember that goals have to turn into actions. There has to be more than a to-do list; you must check items off.
6. Think of things in terms of the big picture. Having an excitement for the future helps you make choices to get you there.
7. Stop rushing and enjoy. Appreciating what's around you and what's ahead of you instead of regretting the present and being apprehensive about the future brings peace in the midst of a busy life.
Intentional people live their lives with confidence and peace, both of which are commonly sought after. So be intentional: live life with purpose, live it boldly and pursue your goals.
