Last week, my school had a fire drill, just as we do every month. It was a pleasant, 70-degree day: perfect weather to practice evacuating the building. As I walked from my classroom to exit the building, I looked around to see every person's eyes glued to their phone. It wasn't just me who noticed. When I came back inside, my math teacher went on a rant about how everyone was on their phones during the drill. And guess what? Turns out the fire "drill" we had was not even a drill! The sprinklers went off in the gym, so we were in real danger. But, of course the people in my generation are too busy checking Twitter to notice what is going on around them.

This got me thinking about how obsessed this generation is with their phones. I understand that it is fun to check in and see what other people are doing; however, it has come to the point where kids can not even go five minutes without checking their phones. It is even starting to come in the way of our safety. So it's time to put the phones down! Here are 50 things to do instead of checking your phone:

1. Do some yoga.

2. Put a walkie talkie in your mailbox and shout at everyone who walks by.

3. Think about what you are going to be for Halloween (it's next week!)

4. Make your Halloween costume.

5. Make a care package.

6. Write a letter to a family member.

7. Dance.

8. Plant a garden.

39. Go for a walk.

40. Take a hike.

41. Create your own language.

42. Start vlogging.

43. Have a picnic.

44. Have a spa night.

45. Make a list of your goals.

46. Host a movie night.

47. Make a scarecrow.

48. Do a puzzle.

49. Learn calligraphy.

50. Give someone a compliment.

Clearly, there are plenty of things to do other than check up on social media. Live in the moment; take in what is going on around you. And who knows, putting your phone down might even help you escape a fire one day!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
