On August 2, Instagram proudly introduced us to their latest feature called Instagram Stories. An outlet to display moments of your day without the pressure of double posting. A wonderful way to, "let the world know your story," and the best part? Your story is only up for 24 hours before it gets deleted.
Although Instagram introduced their cool new update with tons of excitement, we've all seen it before with Snapchat. With the constant evolution of technology and the World Wide Web, it's not uncommon for different social media outlets to compete for our attention. New and improved updates occur quite frequently, but such lucid similarities between Instagram stories and Snapchat had us all saying, "What the f*** is this?"
The first day Insta-stories were up and running I noticed that most people tried it out as harmless promotion for their Snapchat, but when I asked my friends what they thought of it most gave confused and slightly aggressive responses like, "its stupid," and "I don't understand the point of this when we have Snapchat."
Even with the constant pressure and demands of society to be entertained, it's strange that Instagram and Snapchat would be in competition because they are both owned by Facebook. Regardless, Insta-Stories is not just a replica of Snapchat, it has actually done some good since it's release.
Brands, stores, and franchises have used the update to their advantage as a marketing strategy to sell their service and products to the average consumer. It's a better way for them to show what they have to offer without blowing up our feed with tons of pictures a day. Upon the arrival of Insta-stories, I noticed that these kind of accounts are the only people really using it.
My friend Lisa Wedemeyer agreed with me on this observation, "Feels like a blatant rip off. I find myself looking at
it more than I expected though because it's easy to access. I see it being used
more by pages I follow, and not actual friends of mine who are still posting
more to Snapchat."
So I think that answers the question on whether or not Instagram Stories will create an end to Snapchat. We did watch Instagram create the Insta-videos feature, causing a slow demise to Vine. Although even with the fancy filters provided by Instagram, Snapchat seems to be doing better than ever so I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.
