On the day of my high school graduation my journalism teacher of 4 years gifted each of the graduating seniors with a book by Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
I always knew how famous Dr. Seuss was from green eggs and ham to The Grinch, but this book provided more than just rhymes and a happy ending for me.
With 2017 approaching, New Years resolutions starting, and the start of spring semester a few words of wisdom from Dr. Seuss wouldn’t be so bad.
“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
Remembering that no one can be you is so important especially when it is so easy to get lost in the crowd. So in 2017 strive to be “Youer than You.”
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
In 2017 make your own way, stand up for something, and experience new things.
“The MORE that you READ. The more THINGS you will KNOW. The MORE you LEARN. The more PLACES you’ll GO!”
Wake up earlier, read a book, go to class, learn new things, make 2017 better than 2016.
“You’re off to great places, Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way!”
Whether your mountain is trying out for the football team, being promoted at your job or making all A’s in your classes, you have to seize the day and know that with a New Year approaching there are great opportunities out there waiting for you.
“And will you succeed? YES, YOU WILL, INDEED (98 and ¼ percent guaranteed) KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS.”
So when your teacher isn’t giving you an extension on a paper, or your car breaks down, don’t give up because you’ll get through it, you’ll move mountains; and you’ll come out on the other side better than before.
“Oh the Places You’ll Go!” will always hold a special place in my heart; It helped me through my freshman year of college and I’m sure 10 years down the road it will still inspire me.
