Two weeks before my high-school graduation, my father told me he was unhappy with my decision to attend the college of my dreams. I vividly remember losing all hope, because I knew there was conflict. But as the days flew by and I hesitantly put on my cap and gown, I realized the only way to fulfill my own life was to actually live it. Now, slumped in a cafeteria booth, watching the colorful autumn leaves blow through the boisterous city of Boston, I've realized one thing: to always go with my gut and regret absolutely nothing.
Often, regret holds people captive of guilt. This concept of feeling saddened for past decisions is completely asinine. Just think, we all make decisions and act upon them. Clearly, if we didn't want to commit to a certain deed, we wouldn't have done so in the first place. So why is it that certain memories we have are associated with regret? Isn't this concept contradictory to who we are individually? Seriously, if we take the time to act upon certain opportunities, then it's obvious we had the initial desire to do so.
The point is, everyone does what they want, whether they are aware of it at the time or not. Confessedly, I have done a plethora of things that are questionable, but at the same time, I can honestly say that each moment was completely worth it. My actions are rooted in who I am, they are not regrets. And my memories are a part of me, which is why I don't suppress them. This idea of regret is, as mentioned before, quite alarming since we all commit to something at one point in time. So why is it then, that we look back and hate our actions? Each individual should be okay, if not proud, of their past. Regret is simply the influence of judgment in my opinion. If we allow others to impact how we feel about our previous actions, there is no point in acting at all. Furthermore, the next time faced with an opportunity or decision within reason, my advice is to simply go with it. The more you contemplate what you should do, the less assertive you become in your final decision. Life is a matter of being content, thus, there is no point in being ashamed with what you have done. Simply get over it and move on, making sure that you don't do it again. Lastly, don't regret, for it is a waste of time and energy.
Finally, regret is something we all may feel in our lives. But live each day the way you want and hold true to you decisions, which at times will bring about plenty of repercussions. Keep in mind that overall, it is better to experience than to simply sit back and watch opportunities go by.
