This past week, my Editor-in-Chief mentioned in a mass email that she was going to Gettysburg, PA over the weekend to celebrate Halloween with her parents and asked us if we had any suggestions as to what she should do. So I, being a Gettysburg native (well, 20 minutes east go Gettysburg, but still) jumped at the chance to show her around my hometown. While writing it, I figured others could get some use out of my inside knowledge.
1. Gettysburg is haunted AF, so are HELLA ghost tours and some are pretty great.
2. Go to Sach’s bridge. It’s a popular spot for ghost hunting that you can do yourself and a lot of my friends go all the time. There’s a ghost that supposedly resides there (I forget his name right now) and if you light a cigarette and rest it on the sides of the bridge, he’ll come take a drag from it. I’ve tried it. It’s a thing. It’s weird. Just don’t be rude.
3. Also, If you sit in the middle of the bridge and turn on your recorder, you can pick things up. It’s a super creepy place that’s 10/10.
4. The cops in the Battlefield, if you go, LOVE to catch speeders and are everywhere. Be careful. The Gettysburg square is hellish to drive in, especially when it’s busy. I hate it more than anything (people in the square just GIVE you the right of way! Like??? YOU HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY! JUST DRIVE! YOU’RE ALREADY IN THE SQUARE! WHAT ARE YOU DOING???).
5. The Lincoln Diner is cheap and right in the center of town and open 24 hours.
6. The Majestic Theater is just down the street from the Lincoln Diner and plays indie movies, if you’re into that (it plays them even if you’re not into them, too).
7.Check out the Farnsworth house. My ex-boyfriend’s grandparents own it and it’s pretty lit. It has ghost tours and good food #Fancy.
8. My ex-boyfriend's parents own an ice cream shop just down the street from the Farnsworth House called Cone Sweet Cone. It has amazing homemade ice cream! #ShamelessPlug
9. Devil’s Den is place in the battlefield thats haunted AF and is super fun to go. It’s a bunch of huge rocks that you can climb on and around and under. Part of the Battle of Gettysburg was fought there so #Ghosts.
10. Also, there's Little Round Top which is this neat little tower on the hill overlooking Devil’s Den.
11. If you go to Little Round Top, rub Lincoln’s nose for good luck.
12. The Battlefield is a national park so it closes at sun down, but people go anyway. I never did because I fear being yelled at, but if you do go, be careful.
13. New Oxford is 20 minutes from there. There are a lot of antique places and a really bomb coffee place on the square and a REALLY good donut place called Holy Joe’s.
14. Hanover is also 20 minutes from Gettysburg which is home of Utz and Snyder's of Hanover (go figure). Also more food places and a terrible mall, but there's Chipotle (not in the mall).
15. Walking around the Gettysburg square is nice because Gettysburg is a really cute town. There are a lot of little shops that sell a myriad of different things (there’s a watch and clock shop and a hat shop? Why?). There are also a butt ton of ice cream places.
16. Speaking of ice cream, check out Mr. G’s in town. It’s a really popular ice cream spot.
17. Parking is metered almost everywhere so get quarters.
18. If you want more traditional shopping, there’s an outdoor shopping mall called The Outlets at Gettysburg.
19. Also a really nice movie theater called Gateway Theater!
20. The Jennie Wade house is a thing. It’s where the only civilian who died during the Battle of Gettysburg was shot while pulling something out of her oven in her home. It’s wild.
Have fun in Gettysburg! It's a great place to go for a day or two! Just don't look like a tourist or people I went to high school with will complain about you.
