Inequity and Injustice

Thoughts on the role of education in responding to inequity and injustice and teaching as a political act

20

I believe that there is truly a lot of unfairness and injustice in the education system to start off by saying I believe that in America all children no matter what they look like should be able to access free education. The education they receive should be all equal and the schools they attend all a safe place. Also teachers should be teaching these students to love one another despite of differences and teach them it's okay to be different, and do their best to give each student equal opportunity. But sadly this isn't a perfect world. Children of color, children of the LGBTQ community, children who are immigrants, children of low income families don't always receive a satisfactory and safe education space. Looking at this situation in terms of politics, Betsy DeVos was chosen by Trump to serve as the US Secretary of Education. According to an article I read on the Huffington post website, " Education Secretary Betsy DeVos ...said schools can choose to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement on potentially undocumented students." (Rebecca Klein.Education Reporter, HuffPost). I think it is very dangerous to have someone in charge who believes that it is okay for students to be taken out of class because they might be undocumented. She used the word " potentially" so that doesn't imply that they 100% are undocumented. First of all students who are undocumented should be able to access education in America!! But besides the fact, the students who are undocumented are probably scared to attend school, and also the students that are falsely accused might be embarrassed in school for being called out because of the way they look. I also believe that its teachers responsibilities to teach kids from a young age about different types of cultures and to accept all people no matter what they believe in or what they look like. I think it's important that they let kids ask questions and answer their questions with the right answers. For the most part of what I have experienced is that people are racist probably because their parents were racist. Discrimination is such a big issue in America and having kids being put down in schools where it's supposed to be a safe place that encourages you to be your best, is unacceptable. Kids are de -motivated and feel as if they don't even matter and they have not shot. Trump's white nationalist views are also doing a lot of damage. Trump canceling remembrance days, making people feel like they don't exist, trying to wash them away is not what America should be about. A lot of people are forgotten about and a lot of the type people who do have voices and platforms don't speak out on the issues of America. And the teachers the people shaping the future youth have to recognize all cultures and recognize all students and not make the classroom feel like a jail cell. Teachers should want to bond relationships with the students and not just make students be quiet and regurgitate information. Teachers should also not favor students just because they perform well, they should always be worried about all their students and give them as many resources as possible.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
