Before coming to college, I was pretty comfortable spending time by myself. Don't get me wrong, I love hanging out with friends to shop, watch movies, or do homework, but I always felt something so peaceful about running errands or spending an entire day watching Netflix alone.
However in college, it's VERY hard to make time for just yourself. You stay constantly busy, and even when you do have free time, FOMO keeps you from spending it by yourself. You're making all new friends and just want to be with them all the time. I totally understand that, but I find that spending time with me, myself, and I every now and then makes me a better/more tolerable friend to all the new people I'm meeting.
Here are some ways to indulge in alone time…
Go outside: One of my favorite things to do is sit on my porch and drink coffee. Another fav is taking my dogs for a walk -- makes all of us happy!
Watch a movie: Saturday and Sunday mornings are the best for finding old movies on TV and not moving from the couch until its over.
Unplug: This one is obvious, but it doesn't really count as being alone if you're constantly texting friends or glued to social media. Take time for JUST YOU and not actually think about anything.
Run errands: If you're anything like me, you have an ongoing list of things to get done and places you need to go to. Sometimes it's hard to do get those things done when you're with other people. Dedicate a day to running the roads and crossing things off that checklist -- it's such a relieving feeling!
While some people are scared of alone time because they don't like to spend time by themselves and feel lonely, if you make yourself do it, you'll discover how calming and relaxing it really can be.
