Lately when I've been looking at news articles about Self-Driving Cars I see the negative aspects of it. I read about how the Google Car crashed or movies where robots take control of the cars. However I think that self-driving cars have so much potential. and interest. However new technology can always disrupt things for the better and for the worse.
I recently watched a video by cpc grey video and it had some good points about self driving cars.
(Here's the link!)
Some additional points to consider about these type of cars is the ease.
The elderly will still have their freedom to travel without an friend. When people get old they start to lose their eyesight. As a result their license gets revoked. With a self-driving car they still get their freedom to travel.
Additionally parking lots will be much simpler. A self-driving car can drop you off at your destination, then it will find a lot to park in. In my ISME newsletter it also brought up an interesting idea. .
If you are feeling lazy and don't want to get your groceries, order your groceries online and the store's self driving car can deliver it to you. There don't need to be intersections. Trucks can deliver produce all the quicker. The pros of self-driving cars are limitless.
Conversely this does leave openings for security issues. If there was a hacker they could potentially hack your car. Kidnapping would be quicker. Just program the car to go to the hideout. This is one of the biggest draw-backs of self-driving cars in my opinion. In addition the act of getting people to give up their ability to drive. Most people love to drive. I know one friend who drove 12 hours straight because he liked driving and it was cheaper than airfare. I suspect that intersections will have to remain until this goes away. My guess is that this will take at least a couple of generations before being fully implemented. There are just too many romantic notions about driving. However I believe that Self-Driving cars will be crucial in the future.
