In Defense of Going Home

Nothing is better in this world than a home cooked meal

In Defense of Going Home
Quick LOL

Going home for the weekend is one of the best things to do while in college. If you are lucky enough to live relatively close to school, I highly recommend taking a weekend to yourself and going home. Freshman year, I found that there was a large stigma to going home. The main question I would get when I told people that I was going home on a random weekend was, “Why would you leave campus when here you can go out and party and drink, where as at home you just sit on your couch and talk to your parents”? Back then this question always made me feel bad about leaving campus for a few days and I would in turn have major FOMO while I was home. Looking back now, however, I don’t know why I ever felt that way.

Going home is AWESOME. There are no responsibilities when you go home. You don’t have to do your laundry (if your mom offers to do it for you). You don’t have to sleep on hard small bed. You get to lay on your couch all day and watch random TV shows. You get to play with whatever pet you have and send snaps of him or her to your friends and make them jealous. You get to eat food that doesn’t come from a dining hall. You have access to the family car and can drive all over God's green earth doing random things. There is nothing wrong with going home for the weekend and honestly it provides a much-needed break to the stress and the schedule that is going to college.

There is nothing better than escaping campus and giving your brain a few days to recuperate after a long week. College is stressful and you have to be on 100% of the time. There is no escape from school in college because you live right next to the building where you are tortured in political philosophy in twice a week, for example. You see the same people everyday and hear the same sort of stories and worries and complaints day in and day out. If you are an athlete, like I am, there is no escaping practice or extra workouts. You live, eat, and breathe all things school in college. Yes, college does provide ways of blowing off steam like partying and drinking, but what if nothing is going on that weekend? Then you are stuck in your dorm room once again having a Netflix marathon.

I know that not everyone is able to get home on a random weekend because of traveling restraints and other obstacles and I am lucky that I live close enough to campus that it is very easy for me to go home, even for only an afternoon, but if you need that much needed break, seriously consider going home. Or even going to a friends house and mooching off of their parents. That’s what friends are for anyway right?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
