How Joining Choir Shaped My College Experience

An impulse decision proved to be a life changer. Thanks for the memories, Holy Cross Choir!

How Joining Choir Shaped My College Experience
Emma Garaban

Two years ago, I made the impulse decision to join the College Choir at Holy Cross.

During my freshman year, I attended every performance, but it took me a whole year to gain the confidence to join the group. Sophomore year was the time that I knew that I wanted to get involved, and I can honestly say that it has been quite an experience ever since.

When I first joined choir, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I had never sung in a group before, but having had played the cello since fifth grade, I knew that my ability to read music and having a decent ear would get me somewhere. I went in with an open mind, and before I knew it, I found what I would actively participate in on campus.

Being a part of the College Choir and Chamber Singers has not only increased my love for music, but it has bonded me with an incredible and highly entertaining group of people. We have shared times of frustration and moments of absolute beauty. All of these moments are some of my favorite memories that I will take away from Holy Cross.

Aside from the group of people that being a part of the College Choir and Chamber Singers has bonded me with, I have also had the opportunity to travel to some unforgettable places. One of these trips was at the end of the spring 2015 semester, when we travelled to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here, we sang in multiple locations, while also taking in the sites. The following spring, we travelled to Alabama, which was another trip filled with special moments and incredible food. These are a mere two instances where I am thankful for being a part of the choir.

Senior year is bittersweet. Choir has been such a major part of my experience here at Holy Cross. For this, I say thank you. Thank you for the depth of music that we have covered, thank you for the laughs, thank you for the friends, thank you for the frustration, thank you for the feeling of accomplishment. Joining College Choir at the beginning of my sophomore year was one the best decisions that I have ever made. For the rest of the year, I hope to enjoy as much as I can, but all good things must eventually come to an end.

But for now, I will keep on singing.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
