The definition of music is said to be "the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity; vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony [to express emotions]" according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Yet, I think that music is so much more than that, music has a whole other level of thinking that some people never get to experience. Personally, music is such a big part of my life, and I don't know what I would do in life without it to be honest.
Music brings joy to my life and for something to bring joy to your life, that is truly something special. Music is something that can transcend from one generation to another and something that can bring families together. There is music for every thing you could think of, they sing "Happy Birthday" to you on your birthday, you walk down the aisle at your wedding to the "Wedding March" or something else like it, they play sad music at your funeral, and there are countless of other occasions where there is music. There is literally some kind of music for thing you could think of. I mean they even have music that is associated with sporting events, this may be because I'm from Wisconsin but every time I here "Jump Around," I automatically think of the Wisconsin Badgers football games, although I have never been to one I have seen them on the TV and when that music starts playing it brings everyone together, sometimes even the fans of the opposing teams.
Also since I am from Wisconsin and I live in the Milwaukee area, I get the pleasure of enjoy one of the biggest music festivals in the world and if you don't know which one I'm talking about where have you been, just kidding, I'm talking about Summerfest. Summerfest is a great example on how music brings people together, there are several different stages on the grounds and they each house a different kind of artist each night, whether that artist be country, pop, rock, or anywhere in between. I think the differences between all of the acts that head each stage each year shows that music can be enjoyed by everyone no matter what kind of music you listen to. I remember going to Summerfest one year with my friends and we have completely different preferences on music but we were still able to have a great time because it didn't matter what kind of music we ended up listening to as long as we were all together.
Music is also something that you can use as an escape, and I have to say that I use music as an escape from life many times. Every time I'm having a bad day or I'm going through something hard in life I turn to music. I tend to find a song I really like and play it on repeat in my headphones. I listen to a lot of Cher, like "Believe," "If I Could Turn Back Time," and "Song for the Lonely," and most recently, I've been listening to "Fight Song" and "Stand By You" by Rachel Platten on repeat. There is just something about listening to a song on repeat that helps me cope with what I'm going through at the time.
Music is a huge part of my life, I listen to music every morning on my way to work or school and I listen to music when I do my homework. There aren't many things that I do without music, I even sometimes fall asleep to music. There is something about music that helps me think and I would say that it helps others think as well. Music brings my family together, there are certain artists that my mother grew up listening to that I love to this day and we bond over that shared interest. I use music to get through hard times in life and to get through some boring times in life as well.
What I will say in the end is that no matter what kind of music you listen to, listen to something. You never know when you're going to need it in life and you never know how much it will help you. People will come and go in your life but music is something that will always be there for you when you need it.
